The National Medical Association describes itself as "the largest and oldest national organization representing African-American physicians and their patients in the United States."

The group is headquartered in Washington, DC, and represents more than 25,000 black doctors.

It was founded in 1895, at a time when the American Medical Association admitted only white physicians.

The National Medical Association is the nations oldest and largest organization representing the interests of greater than 30,000 African-American physicians in the United States and around the world. The organization was founded in 1895, in an era when African Americans were denied access to healthcare by traditional healthcare systems. The NMA today is committed to improving the health status and outcomes of all minority and disadvantaged people via its membership, professional development, continuing medical education, advocacy, research and collaborative efforts with federal and private sector entities.
