National League of Cities

The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest organization representing municipal governments in the United States. The National League of Cities represents over 18,000 cities, towns, and villages throughout the US. It was founded as the American Municipal Association.

The current president is Jim Hunt, a councilmember from Clarksburg, WV and the previous president was Washington DC mayor Anthony A. Williams. Past presidents have included such people as former mayors Dennis Archer (Detroit) and William B. Hartsfield (Atlanta). Bart Peterson will become President in 2007.

In 2000, National League of Cities established the Institute for Youth, Education, and Families as a special entity within the organization to help municipal leaders take action on behalf of the children, youth, and families in their communities.

The National League of Cities created a new service called National City Network (NCN) in 2005. National City Network is a web portal that represents a new way for elected city officials, city government workers, and engaged citizens to learn more about local government issues, and to work together to get things done.
