[edit] History

Fulfilling one of the promises made in his first national address as president, Babangida in June 1986 issued Decree Number 19, dissolving the National Security Organization (NSO) and restructuring Nigeria's security services into three separate entities under the Office of the Co-ordinator of National Security.

  • State Security Service (SSS) - Responsible for domestic intelligence
  • National Intelligence Agency (NIA) - Responsible for Foreign intelligence and counterintelligence operations
  • Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) - Responsible for military intelligence.

[edit] NIA Today

Since its inception in 1986, the NIA has gradually evolved into a professionally driven security organization. Entrusted with the responsibility of national security, it has been gathering and analysing intelligence information about Nigeria from the international community, and coordinating with its sister organization on the domestic front, the State Security Service to ensure peace and stability in Nigeria and West Africa.
