National Institute of Technology, Warangal

The National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NITW), started off as the Regional Engineering College, Warangal (RECW), established in 1959, with the then Honourable Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru laying the foundation stone. It was the first of 17 such Regional Engineering Colleges to be set up across the length and breadth of India.

NIT Warangal previously known as REC Warangal is misnomer, as the closest city to the institute is Kazipet. However, Warangal being the larger city and the district headquarters, steals the limelight. The nearest airport is Hyderabad, (140 km) and both Kazipet (2 km) and Warangal (12 km) are important railway stations. The institute is located on two sides of the National Highway No. 202 (Hyderabad - Warangal - Venkatpuram), in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The first departments in Warangal were that of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, started in 1959. Bachelors program in Chemical Engineering were started in 1964. The following year saw the start of Metallurgical engineering program. In 1971, the college started the undergraduate program in Electronics and Communication engineering. In 1976, its affiliation was changed from Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University to Kakatiya University, with which it remained affiliated, till it became a deemed university in 2002.
In 1994, the institute was selected by Overseas Development Administration (ODA) of Great Britain for exchange programmes between, the UK and India in the field of information technology. This program ran till 1999. In 2000, the institute started its MBA program. The next year, a centre of Software Technology Parks of India was opened in its campus. In September 2002, the college was renamed as National Institute of technology and was given a deemed university status.

NIT Warangal offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in BioTechnology, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics and Communications, Mechanical, and Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. In addition to engineering programs, post graduate programs are also offered in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Electronics and Communications Engineering department offers 2 years post-graduate (M.Tech.) programs in [Electronics Instrumentation] and VLSI System design. In VLSI Systems design, it is a special manpower development centre setup by Department of Electronics (DoE), Government of India. Electrical Engineering department offers postgraduate programs in Power Systems and Electrical Machines & Industrial Drives. The Civil engineering departments offers five masters level programs. The specializations offered are Engineering Structures, Water resources Engg., Transportation Engg., Geotechnical Engg., & Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems. The PG programs of mechanical engineering department offer specialization in Thermal Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Computer integrated Manufacturing and Advanced Manufacturing Processes. The masters program of Metallurgical engineering department is in the fields of Industrial Metallurgy.
In the science faculties, M.Sc.(Tech.) in Engineering Physics with specialization in Photonics, Electronics & Instrumentation is offered by Physics. Chemistry department offers masters program in Industrial Chemistry with specialization in 'Dyes, Drugs, Pharmaceuticals and Pesticides' or Modern Methods of Chemical Analysis. The masters courses of Mathematics departments are in the fields of Applied Mathematics and 'Mathematics and Scientific computing'. In addition, the institute also runs a masters in computer application.

NIT Warangal, like other NITs of India, receives students through an all India level entrance examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education All India Engineering Entrance Examination popularly known as AIEEE), for its undergraduate program. The postgraduate program students are selected through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). In addition, there are separate entrance tests of MBA, MCA and other M.Sc. programs. Half of its students are from the home state of Andhra Pradesh, where the other half from other states of India and several foreign countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Tanzania, Mauritius, South Africa, Palestine, Iran, etc.

National Institute of Technology, Warangal being the first NIT (Previously REC) established in 1959, has a huge network of Alumni all over the world. Regular Alumni events are organized in India, USA and few other places annually. The USA Chapter of Alumni network is called "National Institute of Technology Warangal Americas Alumni Chapter"

NIT Warangal holds many technical and cultural events throughout the year. Major annual events include TechnoZion (technical fest) and Spring Spree (cultural fest). Students from all major colleges in Andhra Pradesh and outside the state, in addition to students from countries such as Poland and Bangladesh present their creative, artistic talents in these events.

Among its alumni, NIT Warangal counts Mr. Rao Remala, the first Indian employee of Microsoft.
Recently DataQuest ranked NIT, Warangal as top 7th engineering college in India [1].
