Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology also called NIT-Jalandhar or NITJ and formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (RECJ) is one of the youngest among the twenty National Institutes of Technology of India. The institution was established in the year 1987 as Regional Engineering College and on October 17, 2002, was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India under the control of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi, India.

NITJ has a responsibility of providing high quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for India. The institute offers BTech program in nine disciplines of Engineering and Technology along with research programs leading to MTech and PhD. The institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from Punjab and the rest from other states/union territories of the country.

The students of National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar are drawn from all parts of the country. As per the admission policy, 50% of the students, who join, are from the state of Punjab whereas the other 50% are from the other states of India. At present the hostels have a capacity to accommodate 1050 male and 252 female students. The residential accommodation in hostels comprises of cubicles and dormitories (3 seater).

The admissions to the bachelor degree program run by the institute are by an all India level technical test, known as the AIEEE. The admissions to the Master Degree Programs are by the GATE exam conducted by the IITs and IISc.

To promote academic and cultural activities each Department has a constituted Departmental Society. The brief introduction and the activities of the various societies are given below:

The institute is regularly visited by various Indian and foreign MNCs for offering jobs to final year students in various courses [1]. The ones regular on the campus are:

Indian Government run organizations like the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and DRDO also visit the campus for placements. Year 2007 also saw global heavyweights viz. Google and Microsoft visiting campus. NTPC also selected couple of brains from NITJ. Year 2007 saw best placements ever for NITJ since its inception.

National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar was ranked at 18th position in list of the top 20 engineering colleges in India. It was ranked 4th among all NITs. The ranking was released by the India Today weekly magazine. [2]
