National Institute of Economic and Social Research
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) is Britain's longest established independent economic research institute with over sixty years experience of applying academic excellence to the needs of business and policy makers. It was established in 1938 with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pilgrim Trust, the Leverhulme Trust and the Halley Stewart Trust. The most important output of NIESR has been a macroeconomic model of the UK economy which is used to produce forecasts of the UK economy, published quarterly in the National Institute Economic Review. Forecasts are also published for various other OECD countries.
The Institute is independent of all party political interests. It receives no core funding from government and is not affiliated to any single university, although its staff regularly undertake projects in collaboration with leading academic institutions.
Its president is Lord Burns. Professor Stephen Nickell is chairman of the council. The council also includes Charles Bean.
