The National Institute of Design (राष्ट्रीय डिज़ाइन संस्थान), or NID, is the foremost design Institute in India. It is stituated in the city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The National Institute of Design was created in 1961 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Industry (now the Ministry of Commerce & Industry). It was modelled on industrial-design centres such as the Bauhaus and Ulm in Germany. On 19 July 2004, the NID started the I.T. Integrated Design Programmes (New Media Design, Information and Digital Design, and Software & User Interface Design) at Gandhinagar, the new campus.
In response to significant economic and industrial changes after independence, the Government of India invited the design team of Charles and Ray Eames to recommend a programme of design to serve as an aid to the newly-established small industries in India. On the basis of their document, "The India Report", the Government set up the NID for research, service, and training in Industrial Design and Visual Communication.
The mandate of the NID is to promote the spread of design education, professional standards and benchmarks, research, and training in India. The institute offers two main qualifications: the Graduate Diploma Programme in Design and the Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design.
