The National Informatics Centre (NIC) is a premier Science & Technology organization of the Government of India in the field of Informatics Services and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications. It has been instrumental in steering e-governance applications in Government Departments at Centre, States and Districts, facilitating improvement in government services and wider transparency. To facilitate this, NIC has established a nationwide ICT Network, NICNET – with gateway nodes at about 53 Central Government Departments, 35 State / Union Territory Secretariats and 603 District Collectorates. This nation-wide Computer-Communication Network NICNET has been designated as the ICT Network of Government of India.


NIC has been offering network services over C-band and Ku-band (TDMA, FTDMA, SCPC & Satellite broadband) VSATs, Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) and Local Area Networks (LANs) with gateway for Internet and Intranet resource sharing.


NIC is under the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Government of India. The headquarters of NIC is located at New Delhi. The State Centres of NIC are established in all the State Capitals. In order to cater to the ICT needs at grassroot level, NIC has also set up offices at District Collectorates
