National Election Studies

The American National Election Studies is the leading academically-run national survey of voters in the United States, conducted after every presidential election. Though the ANES was formally established by a National Science Foundation grant in 1977, the data are a continuation of studies going back to 1948. The study has been based at the University of Michigan since its origin and, since 2005, has been run in partnership with Stanford University. The consistency of the studies, asking the same questions repeatedly over time, makes it very useful for academic research with the result that it is frequently cited in works of political science. Early ANES data was the basis for The American Voter (1960), as well as later work on the same subjects at the University.
Other sources for such data include exit polls (until recently conducted primarily by the now-defunct Voter News Service). However, the relative accuracy of exit polls, which are often administered in ways that sacrifice data quality for speed of completion, is a matter of considerable debate.
