From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is an independent weekly newspaper published since October 1964 by lay and religious of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. It is circulated in the United States as well as ninety-six other countries on six continents.

NCR is generally more progressive than other American Roman Catholic periodicals. Some consider the publication less than fully Catholic because of its opposition to official Church teachings on birth control, celibacy and other issues dealing with matters of sexual morality. It has taken strong editorial positions supportive of nonviolence, social justice and integrity of the natural environment. NCR prides itself on its reporting and has won the General Excellence award from the Catholic Press Association in the category of national news publications each year from 2000 through 2006.

Well-known writers for the NCR include Joan Chittister, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, and John L. Allen, Jr.. The paper is based in midtown Kansas City, Mo.
