Category:Native American tribes of South Carolina

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When the first Europeans came to South Carolina, it was already inhabited by people of a number of large and small tribes, called "Indians" by the explorers.

These people were decimated by new diseases through contact with the Europeans, and a few tribal groups are considered extinguished; if there were any remnants, they joined with other tribes. There was some warring, though, in contrast with later settlement of the mid-North American continent, contact was relatively peaceful, until the new land began to fill up with settlers and the Native Americans were first pushed onto reservations, then largely evicted from them. A huge, forced migration of the Native Americans from South Carolina to what is now Oklahoma and other western sites occurred during the presidency of Andrew Jackson.

Remnants of the tribes that avoided the migration have begun to seek official recognition from the state of South Carolina.
