The article states that everybody in the credits is now employed by Valve except the special thanks. I think what it means is that the top 6 (the dev team) are now employed by Valve. For instance, Josh Billadeau was a freelance musician for various Digipen games and is now (I believe) employed by Nintendo Software Technology.
