This patronymic comes from a one root remnant of one of the ancient two-root Lithuanian noble names, which predate 1450. The surviving root is cognate with noreti--"to want, to wish, to need." It appears in such two root forms as Narbutas "vitally needed," Narimantas "needed wisdom," Nartautas "needed by the people," and so on. The patronymic suffix "iewicz" means "son of."

Antoni, born in 1791 in the hamlet of Adamicach, was commissioned a lieutenant in the Polish Army in 1829. He participated in the campaign of 1812 in Russia, of 1813 in Germany, and of 1814 in France. Ezechiel was commissioned a lieutenant in the Polish Army in 1815. Ignacy, born in 1795 in the hamlet of S'wirnny, in the district of Wilkomierz (Ukmerge), was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Polish Army in 1823.
