Narayanrao Peshwa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

'Narayanrao Peshwa'(born 1749 - 1773) became the Peshwa(1772-1773) after the death of Madhavrao Peshwa in 1772. He was murdered by the bodyguards of his uncle Raghunathrao in 1773 in Shaniwarwada in Pune. The murder was done on the orders of Raghunathrao's wife Anandi bai. The soldiers who had been deputed to capture him were given orders to hold him (dhara). But Anandi bai changed them to 'mara'(kill) by changing 'dh' in dhara to 'm' making it 'mara'. Over 200 hundred years after his ghastly murder, cries of "Kaka maala vaachwa, Kaka maala vaachwa", meaning "save me O uncle, please save me" are said to still be heard echoing within the walls of Shaniwar Wada fort in Pune, every midnight of his death anniversary. The great political statesman Ram Shastri alias Shastribuwa lived during this time.
