Nar Shaddaa is the largest moon that orbits the planet of Nal Hutta in the fictional Star Wars Expanded Universe.

More commonly known as the "Smuggler's Moon", Nar Shaddaa is similar to Coruscant in that its surface is entirely overgrown with city sprawl (an ecumenopolis).

When the Hutts left their homeworld of Varl, they displaced the Evocii, native to Nal Hutta, to Nar Shaddaa. Eventually the moon was annexed and the Hutts started building spaceports and docking bays across its surface, some stretching out into orbit. In between these ports, massive vertical cities grew. Like Coruscant, the lower levels fell into disrepair and became havens for the lowest lifeforms (particularly descendants of the Evocii) on the moon.

Over time, Nar Shaddaa went from a prosperous metropolis to a criminal haven, where anything illegal elsewhere was performed freely.

[edit] Other appearances

Nar Shaddaa plays a major role in the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series of computer games. Every game in the series, except Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, features at least one single-player level set inside Nar Shaddaa's vertical cities. Jedi Academy does, however, include a mention of Nar Shaddaa which is the location of Lannik Racto's secret assassin droid factory. Jedi Academy also includes a multi-player level set on Nar Shaddaa.

In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords the Jedi Exile travels to Nar Shaddaa to track down Jedi Master Zez-Kai Ell, and much later in Darksaber, Chewbacca and R2-D2 make a visit to receive information from an Information Broker.

The fan film Star Wars: Revelations references the moon.
