From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Naomasa Sakonju (1890-1948) was a Japanese vice admiral, later taking part in the Battle of Leyte in 1944.
Upon graduation from the Japanese Naval Academy in 1912, Sakonju was assigned as a naval attache in Thailand until Japan's delaration of war on the United States. Continuing to remain in Thailand until July 1943, he was assigned as commanding officer of the 16th Division in September. Playing an important role during the Battle of Leyte, Sakonju's transport unit successfully transported troops to the island.
A Vice Admiral in October 1944, Sakonju became chief of staff of the China Area Fleet remaining in that post until the war's end in 1945. In 1946, Sakonju was found guilty of war crimes by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and executed in 1948.
