Nanette Babcock is the third episode of the American television drama Nip/Tuck. It aired on August 5, 2003.
[edit] Plot
The episode begins with a consult in Christian's office. We can see that the man is a Michael Jackson impersonator, who has had extensive surgery. Christian refuses the man, and as he is walking out, Mrs. Grubman enters the scene and complains to Christian that the sheets in the recovery center are bad, and she will need comfy sheets to recover from her upcoming tummy tuck. Christian obliges. Chez McNamara, Sean discovers the results of Matt's little self-surgery, and agrees to take him into his office to get a proper circumcision if Matt agrees to start communicating with Sean about his life. Matt agrees.
The patient of this episode, Nanette Babcock, is an obese woman with a serious self-image issue. During the consult with Christian, Grace enters, and this is the first meeting of the two. Christian is a little taken aback that Pendleton is not there, but lets Grace sit in. When reading the patient form, she discovers that Nanette is on lithium. Cutting back to the McNamara house, Sean and Julia are preparing Matt for surgery. A police officer knocks on the door and informs Julia that the plumber has filed a complaint about the gerbil. She must pay a $5000 fine, or attend anger management. Sean believes the cop has made an error, but when Julia confirms the truth, Sean is shocked.
As Sean is about to make the initial cut on Matt, he gets very nervous, and Christian offers to switch with him. Christian will perform the circumcision on Matt, and Sean can do Mrs. Grubman's tummy tuck. Sean agrees. After the surgery, Grace has bad news. Nanette's blood test came back negative for lithium--she is a manic-depressive resisting medication. She suggests against surgery, and Sean sides with her. This angers Christian, but eventually Sean forces Christian to cancel the appointments with Nanette. She screams in response, telling Christian she hopes he gets cancer.
A few days later, Christian leaves his office to find that his car has been completely trashed. He immediately suspects Nanette, but when he is at the repair shop, he gets a phone call from Sean saying that Mrs. Grubman is scheduled for another surgery. Christian says that he didn't authorize this, and so he calls Grubman to find out what's going on. She is at the airport preparing for a trip to Tahiti. Turns out that she scheduled it herself. This angers Christian, and he "cuts her off." No more surgeries! As she tries to go through the metal detector, it keeps going off...and she runs from security. They tackle her to the ground.
It turns out that a cautery tip was left in the cavity during the surgery. She decides to sue McNamara/Troy for $10,000,000, leveling blame at Christian, even though Sean made the error. A major fight erupts between the two doctors and Liz. Grace goes to visit Nanette to suggest she goes back on medication and get help. Nanette forces her to leave. In a last ditch effort to save the practice, Dr. Troy goes to Mrs. Grubman's home, and eventually agrees to be her date to a charity ball. They return home that night, and through some sexy sweet-talk, is able to convince her to drop the suit...she agrees on one condition: that she is a lifetime pro bono.
Matt, after having all of his stitches out, goes to Vanessa's house to finally be able to have sex with her, now that he has been circumcised. When he opens her bedroom door, he finds her making out with someone else...another girl. He runs off. Later that night, when Sean asks Matt how "it" went, Matt tells him that it was everything he wanted it to be, then disappears into his room and cries.
That leaves us only to resolve the Nanette situation: Sean invites her back to his office and gives her the number of a psychologist. Nanette takes this number, then returns home. In the final few seconds of the episode, we see her grab a gun and put it in her mouth. The camera pans up, and after a few seconds a shot is fired and blood sprays on the wall on top of the pictures of the beautiful models from magazines she formed a collage with.
