Nandikar is one of India's most famous theatre groups. The group has its headquarters in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, but has the entire world as its workplace.
It was founded under the leadership of Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay in 1960. At the end of the 1970-ties Rudraprasad Sengupta became the leader. With Sengupta a new era started, Nandikar turned from a pure performance oriented theatre group to an organisation with a wide range of projects, including an annual national theatre festival.
Among the groups prominent actresses and actors you find Swatilekha Sengupta, who starred in Satyajit Ray's movie Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) from 1984 and Roland Joffé's City of Joy (1992), Goutam Halder, Debshankar Halder and Sohini Sengupta Halder, who acted in Rituparna Sengupta's movie Paromitar Ek Din (2000). Rudraprasad Sengupta is also a prominent actor. Besides acting in Nandikar productions, he has also played in e.g. Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha (1993).
Nandikar has performed in several countries outside India, including Bangladesh, Germany, Sweden, UK and USA.
