[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Jasmeet "Jazz" Singh (Katrina Kaif) is an Indian girl, brought up lovingly by her father Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor). Jazz loves everything that is British - something her father, a very Indian man with very Indian values, cannot understand. And he's not alone: Parvez Khan (Javed Sheikh), Manmohan's best friend, has a son, Imran Khan (Upen Patel), who displays the same behaviour as Jazz and even has a live-in relationship with a British girl; something, Parvez can barely tolerate.

Manmohan Singh forces his daughter to marry a typical Indian in India: Arjun (Akshay Kumar) is a Punjabi farmer. He barely speaks English, gets married to Jazz - and though initially joyful about his beautiful bride, he realizes that she still intends to marry her British boyfriend and Arjun is forced to watch as Jazz flirts with another man. However, Arjun will do anything to make his beloved happy and fall in love with him...

[edit] Response

[edit] Box office

Namastey London opened to a good reponse of 50-60%. The film did better in the northern parts of India especially in East Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh [4]. It also did well in Mumbai and in the first week of its release collected Rs. 7,35,75,657 [5]. The film was received averagely in other parts of the country [6]. The success of the film ended a long spell of box office failures since the release of Guru in January 2007.

The film was a huge hit overseas. It debuted at number 9 on the UK charts and similarly debuted within the top 20 of the US and Australian charts. The film collected £ 238,841 in the first week of its release [7]

[edit] Reviews

The first reviews of the film were average to good. Taran Adarsh of indiafm.com said Namastey London is addictive stuff. You watch it once, you wanna watch it again [8].

On Katrina Kaif's performance he said she handles the complex part with remarkable ease. The pretty lass is only getting better with every film [8]. Akshay Kumar has received almost unaminous praise for his portrayal of Arjun Singh, with a critic saying Kumar certainly leaves his mark throughout the flick. One of the coolest performances of the star [9]. Adarsh said One of his finest performances so far, Namastey London also marks the coming of age of an actor who was often dubbed as an action hero or a funster. Akshay not only wins the heart of Katrina on screen, he’s sure to win the hearts of millions of moviegoers with a terrific portrayal in this film [8]. Rishi Kapoor received similar acclaim for his performance.

Some reviews have been average with a verdict of 2 out of 5 stars [10][10]. On the other hand, BollySpice.com has given it 4 stars [2].
