Namapoikia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Namapoikia rietoogensis is an Ediacaran fossil in the form of a calcareous sheet, dome or tube. It was described by Rachael Wood and others in 2002. It is found in the Omkyk Member from Rietoog in southern Namibia, along with Cloudia fossils. The fossil is about 549 million years old. The size is up to one meter in diameter, it is fully biomineralized. It encrusts vertical fissures in the reef in which it originally grew.
The authors speculate that the orgiginal organism was a poriferan or cnidarian.
