Nakatonbetsu, Hokkaido

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nakatonbetsu (中頓別町; -chou) is a town located in Esashi District, Soya, Hokkaido, Japan.

As of 2004, the town has an estimated population of 2,339 and a density of 5.87 persons per km². The total area is 398.55 km².

Nakatonbetsu was a gold mining outpost in older times. In the present day, it is a shrinking town that depends largely on dairy farming. For the past few years, efforts have been underway to forge a merger agreement with its larger neighbor, Hamatonbetsu, Hokkaido. The merger failed to meet the deadline for fiscal year 2005 because of the spoiling effect of Sarufutsu, Hokkaido's entry and subsequent withdrawal from the deal.
