Nailsea and Backwell railway station is a station located between the town of Nailsea and the village of Backwell in south-west England. The station is 13 km (8 miles) west of Bristol Temple Meads towards Weston-super-Mare and is managed by First Great Western.

The station sits atop a bridge, which spans the main road between Nailsea and Backwell. Over the decades it has alternated between its current name and simply 'Nailsea', even though it is in Backwell.

It is a small station with two platforms, and a small ticket office which is only manned at limited times. In 2007, a ticket machine was installed at the station. The platforms are too short for the high speed trains that call, passengers cannot alight from the last three carriages. The station contains no public conveniences, such as toilets; however it does have a shelter on each platform. There are monitors and a public address system to announce the arrival or cancellation of trains. Local residents complained about the noise of the announcements, as a result the volume was reduced. This means they can be difficult to hear on a windy day.

Bristol International Airport at Lulsgate is less than three miles away, but to reach it via public transport requires a rail journey via Bristol Temple Meads in the city centre followed by a bus journey back out to Lulsgate.

[edit] Service

Monday to Saturday daytimes there is a half-hourly service to Bristol Temple Meads eastbound and Weston-super-Mare (hourly to Taunton) westbound. Evenings and Sundays there is generally a hourly service in each direction. The journey time to Bristol Temple Meads takes 11 minutes.

Direct trains to London Paddington take two hours; there are three of these every weekday morning.

[edit] History

The station was opened by the Bristol and Exeter Railway on 14 June 1841 as Nailsea, was renamed 'Nailsea and Backwell' in 1905, reverted to 'Nailsea' again in 1974 and has been renamed to 'Nailsea & Backwell' again since.[1]
