[edit] Categories

Hill: thanks for the new stuff, and a tip which saves work for others: could you add the categories as you go? At the bottom of each article, for example:

(The "pipe sort", "|Lastname", alphabetizes the person correctly within the category, else they wind up alphabetized under whatever word appears first in the name of the article, usually their first name.) Best, — Bill 11:07, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Sure, so it's an invisible categorization at the bottom of the page? Okay. Sometimes I do not know the nationality of the philosopher, is "category philosophers" then acceptable? Thanks Nagelfar 11:14, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Yup, You'll notice that the category then appears as a working link in the upper right-hand corner of the displayed page (in the "Cologne Blue" skin) or across the bottom of the page (in the default skin). — Bill 11:35, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Masonna.jpg

Hi,

I tagged "Masonna.jpg" with the 'permission' tag - 'permission' images aren't allowed on Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright tags for more info. Thanks - Tempshill 16:08, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

As to the status of the rights from the rights holder, he may consider "no rights reserved" and I'm in the proces of getting feedback to whether this is the case Nagelfar 16:24, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
It is confirmed as 'no rights reserved', I removed your 'permission' warning. Nagelfar 01:40, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Incapacitants

I have placed a tag on the article Incapacitants, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. I did this because the article seems to be a biographical account about a person but it does not indicate how or why that person is notable. If you can indicate why Incapacitants is really notable, I advise you to edit the article promptly, and also put a note on Talk:Incapacitants. Any admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. You might also want to read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles. -- ^demon 23:40, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

There is 'plenty' of information in that newly created article as to why they're notable. Do a google search yourself. I'm removing your notice, too. Nagelfar 23:42, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Can you please tell me what WP:MUSIC guidline this band does meet, with a source to prove it? I did a quick search, but can't find anything. -^demon 23:47, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
They're on plenty on Japanese indie labels, for example. But if you're wanting a gold record for every band here, go put a 'speedy delete' notice on The Gerogerigegege also (I'm sure that will go over well....) Nagelfar 23:51, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
As per WP:NMG that is pretty much what is required, yes. Otherwise the content is functionally WP:unverifiable in e conex f hElisWkpedia. - Just zis  Guy, you know? [T]/[C] (W) AfD? 11:02, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
As I put in ^demon's discussion page; "For performers outside of mass media traditions" #5 is "Is frequently covered in publications devoted to a notable sub-culture.", bands like incapacitants are very much so. Nagelfar 11:04, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Japanoise articles

Hi Nagelfar. First, I'd like to apologize for bulldozing some of your info in the Hijokaidan article recently. (Rookie mistake -- the downside of "Be bold" is overenthusiasm.) The other, and primary, thing is I'd just like to express my appreciation to you for creating some good articles on Japanese noise acts. It's an undercovered area of knowledge on Wikipedia and it's nice to see somebody staying on top of it. MrBook 20:11, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

No problem with the momentary loss of previous info, I was leaving Hijokaidan for someone else to add something to because I'd knew it would happen eventually. The great thing about wikipedia is that those who are passionate for a subject become the best custodians for it, because what you do is then its own reward. Though its great to be appreciated and thank you. Nagelfar 11:09, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] English IPA of foreign names

I saw that you inserted IPA of the English pronunciation (with variants sometimes) in articles like Lenin, Stalin and Heinrich Himmler and I reverted them for the most part. IPA transcriptions are quite useful and should be encouraged, but very seldom for English pronunciations, and never of English pronunciation of foreign names. Transcriptions should only be included if there is an unintuitive pronunciation like with Khruschev, where the orthography is confusing. Names like "Stalin", "Lenin" and "Himmler" aren't difficult to get right for any English speaker and for those who want the real deal, there's the sound file.

English pronunciation of foreign names is for one thing unnecessary clutter in the lead and can easily lead to rather pointless disputes over dialectal variations of English rather than anything that has to do with native pronunciation. Also, when making transcriptions, make one of the part of the name that's really relevant and difficult to figure out without a transcription, which is usually the surname. Himmler's middle name or Russian patronymics aren't interesting enough either in English or the foreign language in question to fill the lead with IPA-hieroglyphics.

Peter Isotalo 12:06, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough. I'm just one to think the more information the better, esp. if its the case that someone is on a computer without sound somewhere etc and cannot access the sound files. I got the idea from answers.com which gives their own version of spellings for each of those persons, which I just translitered to IPA standard to make it unique for wikipedia. Nagelfar 18:07, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Ugh, tell me about it. The sound files would be sooo much more useful if they weren't in .ogg-format. I'm betting that even people who do have Winamp often don't read help links and therefore assume that they can't play it.
But I would advise you to think over the ide about "the more the better". Remember that articles are intended to be read by people with roughly the same expectations as of other encyclopedias. The more information you include into the one article, the harder it is for people to find the info they're looking for. It's also a very real practical problem for us editors since we get ever increasing volumes of prose to verify, copyedit, vandal-patrol, etc.
Peter Isotalo 18:18, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Well yes, I agree it shouldn't be convoluted and should easy to read, which it wasn't on either the Lenin or Stalin article. I just added Stalin's IPA for vɪsɚjɔˈnəvɪtʃ his middle name, but noticed it was removed before your revert for whatever reason. I thought it worked well on the Himmler article though in terms of not being crowded, and thinking of the middle name there as well ("luitpold" not being intuitively pronounced as an English "t" sound on the 'd' and 't' both). Though I understand your revert. Nagelfar 18:24, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Please come help at Socialism

Sam Spade 22:06, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh that old one rears its head again hmm? Nagelfar 01:32, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

According to some people it's just me that has the ugly head ;) Honestly I'm just trying to provide the reader w a balanced account. Alot of people assume socialism means equality and harmony and civil rights, and I think its only fair for them to see some of the bad parts too. Contrary to alot of peoples assumptions, I don't have an anti-socialist agenda, just a NPOV one. See User:Sam Spade/Theoretical Biases if you have any doubts ;)

Sam Spade 11:16, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Me too, with these old tired political issues though, to be honest, I want to contribute, but have grown weary of just how much there is which I feel is too POV to fight. I suppose society will always have a few hang-ups at any given time in history and things like Nazism in relation to Socialism is one of those today. Maybe I'll have a 'second wind' in me in the future to try and weigh my side of the argument to help out, but right now at the thought of getting into it again is a bit of a drain. Best of luck for you in the meantime, it's good for at least one person to stand up to the plate at any given time; if there's gaps of any intelligent opposition it might make our opinions look more fringe and less NPOV. Nagelfar 03:12, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Japanese names

I can help you out. What names are they? --日本穣 Nihonjoe 00:07, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your help! Anything more in the future would be appreciated! Nagelfar 03:09, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I've actually been working on a particular article for a while, it's about Japanese experimental musicians (Japanese noise artists) at List of Japanoise artists; I've basically been finding the names myself through google searches, though it's tedious when you don't know how to read any Japanese. If you could help me, what I'm trying to do is get the Japanese spellings of the names of the main people of this underground music scene, in Kanji, and the names of their bands/projects in Kana. As you can see at List of Japanoise artists I have a few names of persons, like Merzbow (Masami Akita / 秋田昌美), & names of projects too like; Masonna / マゾンナ

If you could help me fill out this one page, I could do all the other work and add the full names to the individual pages. Thanks a lot for offering some help, I'd be grateful for whatever assistence you could give! Nagelfar 00:34, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

About the WP:MOS-JA, it states that names should come in English order according to the article on the individual specifically, not when internally linked on a list; as a list would you think it should be indexed just as any other name with a comma, surname first, for alphabetical purposes? At Wikipedia:Lists (stand-alone lists) it doesn't get very specific on this. Nagelfar 05:35, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
I'm thinking I'm right; sorry to ask to bring you in & revert something on you ;-) doesn't feel very polite of me. We can bring it over to the MoS pages and ask them. How certain MoS articles pertain in other contexts like lists isn't covered very well. Nagelfar 05:41, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the confusion. I clarified the WP:MOS-JA as you were right that it wasn't clear that the name guidelines applied to names outside of articles specifically about a person. The original intent of the guidelines was to apply to all instances, not just in articles about a specific person. --日本穣 Nihonjoe 16:40, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Well, that's progress beyond our little project and for the whole of wikipedia just getting that clarified then, isn't it. ;-) Nagelfar 22:42, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possibly unfree Image:HLHimmler.jpg

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:HLHimmler.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. Please go to its page to provide the necessary information on the source or licensing of this image (if you have any), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.
The originator of this claim, I feel, is grasping for straws. When confronted with an employee of National Archives stating the image is public domain, the user still wishes to protest the issue. I honestly don't know what will make the guy happy. I guess I could evntually dig up the exact microfilm roll number of Himmler's record and put it next to the image along with a NARA seal stating the picture was public. I have to also wonder why a guy from Sweden (as the user states he's from) would be so concerned over thsi one picture and be challenging the word of an American historian who works for the very agency that holds a copy of the picture. The wonders of Wikipedia... -Husnock 20:35, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
The user seems to be taken up the role of ensurer of copyright in wikipedia. I know it's PD as I've studied up on it in the past; I just kept the image and not the copyright information (in the age of wikipedia one must do that now it seems!). Finding the exact number might be the only thing one can do to get necessary proof beyond reasonable doubt for some people. I agree it's a little extreme though, how many images at wikipedia have required a number from a national archive to prove they're PD? Nagelfar 22:14, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Maschalismos

Hi,

I see you wrote the article maschalismos in 2004. It's very interesting, but it would be perfect if you mention the source you used back then. It has had a "Verify" tag since March this year. I thought I should inform you, because I suppose you are the one who can fix that, if anyone.

Regards, --194.145.161.227 17:48, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I so added my source in the talk section. Nagelfar 22:32, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Straight blast

An editor has nominated Straight blast, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Straight blast and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. [edit] Notability of Combat Wounded Veteran

A tag has been placed on Combat Wounded Veteran, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. RJASE1 Talk 14:30, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
