To-do list for Nagpur: edit  · history  · watch  · refresh

The article needs the following:

  1. Improve the organization of the article to make it flow more smoothly without changing the accuracy.
  2. Add the following:
    1. Citations for facts such as the flight by Indian Airlines between Nagpur and Bangkok, the city's climate, etc. The History section needs citations especially badly. Please back up any new information with accurate references and citations from credible sources like newspapers, government documents, and journals. Follow the footnotes format for new citations, like most of the citations already present in the article (see Wikipedia help page for References). If there are no citations available, then add information that has been agreed by consensus in the discussion page.
    2. Information on various localities in the Nagpur city (see thread below).
    3. Latest information on the city's demographics (Percentage of population speaking Marathi, Hindi, etc.), religion, etc.
    4. Information on the orange-industry in the city (very important).
    5. Names of famous people from Nagpur.
  3. Continue to add important information about the city.
  4. Contribute more actively to the discussion page.
  5. Nominate this article as a featured article, or at least a good article in the near future.

[edit] Longitude and latitude

Mostly by guess work and looking at google maps I have zeroed down to 21.15° N 79.08° E. I cant vouch for its correctness though it does seem all right.

[edit] What is Nagpur named after?

Please confirm if Nagpur is named after Nag (snake) or Nagah (Elephants, in sanskrit), who were found in Nagpur and Nag River was their place to quench thrist, bath, and play. It is also said that the Gond King's daughter came to school, St. Joseph's Convent on elephant's back. Please confirm what Nagpur is named after. - Anup Manchalwar, Nagpur Anup Manchalwar 19:17, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recent changes done to Nagpur's page

Macnol recently did some changes to Nagpur. I highly appreciate Macnol's interest in the city but not the changes did to the page. 1) There is unnecessarily wide window has been added to the page which makes the page very bad to scroll while reading. I would suggest resizing window or eliminate it. 2) Why was following information COMPLETELY DELETED? "Nagpur was a scene of great political activity during the freedom struggle. It hosted two annual sessions of the Indian National Congress and the Non Co-Operation Movement was launched in the Nagpur session of 1920. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded in 1925 at Nagpur by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. ". This is a very prominant and important aspect known to almost eveyone living in India. 3) I protest against the following line added to the page. ". Vidarbha is the most backward region of Maharashtra. " Please provide some kind of data or link to reliable source of information on internet by some link to support your statement. 4) Please provide information on this page which would about describing the city, its people, culture, history, administration and so on. Please try to avoid something so unimportant as to which trains/buses/planes go and come through Nagpur. I would suggest removing "of which The Vidarbha Express is most popular". [edit] Article very badly organized

This article needs some serious revision, both in sentence structure and facts. There are a lot of random facts. The history section is good though, but overall, the article needs a lot of organization. --Wikindian 20:42, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What about localities in the city?

The article needs some information on the major localities in the city such as Ramdaspeth, Sitabuldi, Mahal, Civil Lines, Dharampeth, etc.

[edit] Incorrect Population figures

The 3 million plus population for Nagpur city was an estimate which needs a citation. I have replaced it with 2.1 million from the 2001 census. Also, the urban population of VIDARBHA is 3 million plus, not of Nagpur urban area.

Anjan

Vidarbha has a population of 10 million plus. Nagpur district (City + adjoining urban/rural blocks has a population of 3 million plus. I cannot pinpoint the actual urban population of Vidarbha, but together with other smaller ubran centers like Wardha, Amravati, Akola etc., I guess, it should be around 4 million.

[edit] Help with infobox and references

If you know how do to this, then please do it:

1) Along with the 2006 population estimate, also add the 2001 population (according to the 2001 census) in the Nagpur infobox (the blue square with Mayor, population, etc. on the right side of the page at the beginning of the article). The figure is already there in the editing page, but I am having difficulty citing both 2001 population and 2006 population in the infobox.

Thanks!

[edit] External Links

Perhaps there are a few too many unneccessary links in there. Actually, the whole page needs to be redone. It is too badly written write now and does not flow well. --Anshul 08:52, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Private engineering colleges

I have left only the most famous ones in the article.--Wikindian 22:28, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

  • I don't mean to sound daft, but which private engineering colleges have you mentioned in the article? VNIT, LIT, and NFSC are not private colleges. Mention could be made of at least YCCE (est 1983) and SRKNEC, KDK, PCEA (est 1984). ray 18:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suggestion: New Category and splitting of articles

All right, I propose that we split this article into multiple heads and put them ina Category:Nagpur What do you think? --Anshul 09:59, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I disagree - for the moment the article doesn't contain enough content to allow this... Sfacets 10:19, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Same here, the article isn't that long for a city as large as Nagpur. We just need to improve the flow. --Wikindian 18:20, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article flow

The main problem with the Nagpur article is that it contains too many facts and too little coherence. So, the reader is bogged down by the bad flow. This article will require a lot of revision so that it might become "readable."--Wikindian 23:36, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merging article on Sitabuldi

Reason for proposing for the merger:

  • The page on Sitabuldi is very short.
  • Requires reader to know about Nagpur, without the context of Nagpur, Sitabuldi, by itself, is not of much interest.

If the merger makes the article on Nagpur too long, it would be better idea to have a separate page on major localities in Nagpur of which Sitabuldi is a section. -anon69.180.9.141 07:20, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

I disagree, it should be merged. At least until it is more developped and vcan be moved to it's own article. Until then best to keep it all together. Sfacets 09:37, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

@ Sfacets do you disagree with the merger? If you do disagree, then I am confused because you say that "Until then best to keep it all together.", which implies that the two articles Nagpur and Sitabuldi are together as of now and you want to keep them together. On the otherhand, if you do agree with the merger, then again the statement "Until ..." does not make any sense. I may be confusing something, can you please clarify your point.
btw I was asking for including the Sitabuldi article in the article for Nagpur. That way one won't have to go to a separate page just to read a paragraph or two on Sitabuldi. - anon 69.180.9.141 23:53, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I've done the merger, deleting the part about the location of Sitabuldi, of course.--Rmky87 18:18, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Transport section modifications

Air:

...

"Likewise, Qatar Airways has announced that it will start a thrice-weekly service from Nagpur to Doha shortly". should be deleted, as Qatar Airways never started the flight.

Mayank 08. October 2006

"... announced plans to introduce a passenger service to Nagpur from the middle of 2007 and a twice-weekly freighter service around the same time.

Baker said the plans from Doha to Nagpur, where it was supposed to launch flights from this year, were delayed due to delay in supplies of aircraft."

"Qatar Airways (Doha, starts Feb 2007)" should be modified accordingly, in the transport (air) section.

[edit] "Winter Capital" or "Second Capital"

In the introductory text, right in the beginning paragraph of the page, Nagpur has been introduced as the "winter capital" of the state of Maharashtra. As per the government of Maharashtra, I believe, Nagpur is the "second capital" of the state, with the winter session of the assembly taking place here, as well.

"Second Capital" actually indicates that Nagpur is a full-fledged capital of the state, in addition to Mumbai, throughout the year, irrespective of where the assembly session is taking place. So a "second capital" should be higher in stature than a "winter capital", and perhaps, after due referencing this fact can replace the original mention of the city as "winter capital" in the text.

Another interesting fact - The India yearbook published by the government of India every year, does not mention Nagpur as being either the second or winter capital of the state of Maharashtra. It seems that the government of Maharashtra very conveniently overlooked informing the central government (union of states) about the capital status of the city, thereby making sure that Nagpur does not get facilities accorded to a capital city, by the center (eg. Rajdhani express origin point). So "winter" or "second", Nagpur remains a "second-hand" capital. :-(
