Nagisa Furukawa (古河 渚 Furukawa Nagisa?) is a fictional character from the Japanese visual novel Clannad, voiced by Mai Nakahara. She is the heroine of the game. Although she's also a third year, the same as Tomoya, Nagisa is actually one year older because she had to repeat her third year after an illness that lasted nine months. Tomoya met her on the first day returning to school at the long hill path in front of school. She has a strange habit of muttering the names of food that she plans to eat as a way to motivate herself. She wants to reestablish the once-disbanded theatre club. She tends not to have a lot of self-confidence so she often needs help in order to motivate herself through the day.

[edit] Story

The major arc of the story revolves around Nagisa, who is returning to high school after an extended illness made her repeat her third, and last, year. During this arc, Tomoya befriends Nagisa and learns of her dream of joining the theatre club. They soon discover that the club was disbanded, and has no members anymore. While attempting to recreate the club, Nagisa and Tomoya discover that they cannot advertise for new members, having missed the deadline to do so. In order to create an officially recognized club, they find they need at least three members and a sponsor teacher for the club.

Tomoya's bad friend Yōhei Sunohara, who is referred to by his surname, discovers Tomoya's unusual interest in Nagisa and the theater club, and is told a lie that the only reason Tomoya is helping her is to get free bread from her bakery. Jumping at this ulterior motive, Sunohara decides to jump in and help as well, the two of them pretending to be members to make the required three until the club is formed so Nagisa can recruit more members.

Things go well until they find the only teacher who is available to serve as a sponsor and the previous theater club sponsor, Professor Kōmura. Asking him to serve as the club sponsor, they discover that three students had already approached him, trying to establish a choir club. Nagisa approaches these students, but soon gives up, because she's the only one who really wanted to start the theater club anyway. One of the choir students, Rie Nishina, was a skilled concert musician who had to abandon her violin career after an accident.

Sunohara became uncharacteristically angry at Nagisa giving up, claiming the choir club was "hiding behind their handicap." To prove a point, he challenged the basketball club to a 3-on-3 match. This was because Tomoya was also handicapped - in a fight with his father three years ago, his shoulder was injured and healed improperly so that he could no longer raise his right arm above his shoulder. If they could somehow win this 3-on-3 match, then the choir club can no longer hide behind their "handicap defense," Sunohara claimed.

The next sequence involves finding a third member for the team, because while Tomoya and Sunohara are both athletes, Nagisa is a total clutz. Any one of ten characters in the game can be chosen to fill the part. Some characters can result in winning the game, and with some you lose regardless. Either way, in order to win the game, Tomoya must take the last shot, sinking a goal at the last minute.

After this, Nagisa and the choir students agreed to share Kōmura, having him help each club on alternating weeks. Their chance to recruit members passed, but Sunohara and Tomoya agreed to join in as regular members (though they swore against appearing on stage). The newly reestablished theater club is invited to join in on the Founder's Day festival, which is a typical Japanese high school culture festival. Nagisa agrees, and the three of them prepare for the presentation.

Tomoya has another falling out with his father, and Nagisa, wanting the two of them to become friendly again, offers to let Tomoya stay at her house until he and his father can come to terms. While staying with Nagisa, Tomoya learns about Nagisa's illness and a secret her parents had been keeping.
