Naesala, or King Kilvas, is a fictional character from the video game, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, during most of which he is a major antagonist. He is the ruler of the Raven Tribe of Kilvas. At the end of the game he has a change of heart and brings the might of the Kilvas army to Ike's aid. During the final level, you have a choice to bring Naesala into your party and have him assist you in the final battle against King Ashnard.

[edit] Story

Kilvas is a small country south of Goldoa, the dragon country, scattered amongst an archipelago of small islands that bear little resources. The country is extremely poor due to its placement and due to the fact that the ravens that inhabit it aren't liked by many people, beorc or laguz. It is this dislike that has earned them the title of crows instead of ravens. It is Naesala's sole intent as king of Kilvas to gather all the gold he can amass to get the country out of debt and purchase land on the main continent for the prosperity of the country at any means.

He needs gold, and he is willing to do anything for it. He orders legions of ravens to enact acts of piracy on passing beorc vessels making passage to Begnion. He himself takes on a more drastic measure for getting gold; he aids countries with his ravens for use in combat if they pay a handsome fee. He is first seen doing this during Chapter 13, aiding Daein with ravens to fight Ike and his crew. Ultimately Naesala decides not to help Daein despite their payment and orders his crows to steal the treasures on board the ships. During the skirmish Tibarn, king of the hawk tribe, witnessed Naesala's ravens and told of it to the prince of the heron tribe, Reyson.

Reyson was befriended by Naesala during their childhood, and was aided by him during the time of the Serenes Massacre. The Serenes Massacre was a time 20 years prior to the game when angered citizens of Begnion went into the Serenes forest and killed nearly every heron, sans several members of the royal family who escaped to Phoenicis, home of the hawk laguz. Naesala's relationship with Reyson during the middle of the game would decline considerably by Naesala's actions.

Naesala attempts to make up for his aiding of Daein to Reyson by bringing him to the heart of the Serenes Forest to show him what has become of it. Reyson is appalled to find the forest burned to a crisp with not a living thing growing in its extremities. Despite Reyson's rage, the duo are forced to find a place to stay for the night since their lack of night vision is a liability. After some searching they happen upon an empty villa where they plan to spend the night. Naesala leaves Reyson and he tells him he's going to find some food.

In reality, Naesala had betrayed Reyson by selling him to the insane corrupt politician of Begnion, Duke Oliver. After getting paid, Naesala takes flight with his money and leaves Reyson to find he's been sold into slavery. Luckily enough, Ike had been put under the commandment of the Empress of Begnion, Sanaki, who wanted to inspect Duke Oliver's grounds after reports that Oliver was still holding laguz slaves, a practice banned some time before the game. After a tiring long battle, Ike and co. rescue Reyson. Apostle Sanaki is allowed to apologize to Reyson on behalf of her people, and Reyson's pressumed dead sister, Leanne, is found.

Later, in Chapter 19, Daein is tired of two things: the Crimean's army march into their country and Naesala's poor offense in battle despite such strenuous payment. Now Naesala, in the interest of keeping his best contractor, joins the battle personally along with a battalion of crows. At this point the player has three options; avoid Naesala and finish the chapter, defeat Naesala, or have him talk with Reyson, which is considered the canon choice. If the player chooses the later, then Reyson will partially forgive Naesala, as long as Naesala stops aiding Daein in battle and withdraws from the current battle post haste. Naesala somewhat bitterly accepts the truce and leaves along with his ravens.

Naesala keeps his promise and later, and in an act of retribution saves Leanne from captivity. It seems as though he has decided to help Crimea in a change of heart decision. In the final chapter you can choose between Naesala, Tibarn, or Giffca, the Beast King's shadow.

[edit] Statistics

If Naesala is chosen to join in the game, he starts at level 17 with great stats. Generally compared to the other two choices,Tibarn and Giffca, Naesala is unique because he does not have as high a Strength stat or Defense stat as the other two choices, but rather he has huge Speed and Skill stats which allow him to land critical hits and dodge attacks with ease. He also possesses the exclusive Vortex skill[1], which enables him to cast the Wind spell whenever the player chooses to, allowing him to fight back against units with Bows.

  1. ^ Although Naesala is the only unit in the game that has the skill Vortex, it is listed as the Occult skill for ravens. There are not other ravens besides Naesala.
