Nadeem-Shravan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nadeem-Shravan (sometimes credited as Nadeem Shravan) was a music director duo in the Bollywood film industry of India. The duo derives its name from the first names of its two principals, Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod.
Nadeem-Shravan were one of the most popular Indian music directors of the 1990s. They are known for their catchy and melodious songs that feature a strong rhythm. Their popularity took a sharp nose-dive after Nadeem was accused of killing Gulshan Kumar.
Nadeem and Shravan met in 1972 at a function and decided to get together as a composer duo. They gave scores for mediocre-to-flop films for much of the 1970s and 1980suntil hitting the big time with the film Aashiqui (1990).1991 saw Nadeem-Shravan do well with Lawrence D'Souza's Saajan and another collaboration with Mahesh Bhatt in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. Sadak and Phool Aur Kaante proved to be hit scores for them in 1991. In 1992, they provided the music for Shah Rukh Khan's film debut, Deewana. In 1993, they scored Mahesh Bhatt's Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, written by Aamir Khan and starring Aamir and Juhi Chawla.

[edit] Style of Music
Nadeem Shravan made a typical type of songs, easily identified as theirs, with an unmistakable rhythm, such as in Saajan, in the song Too Shayar hai, or Deewana.
Also, a particular style of theirs includes singing of Kumar Sanu, who became popular in 90s film releases, featured in every album of theirs.
In fact Kumar Sanu was their lead singer in almost all their films, in the 90s Kumar Sanu and Nadeem-Shravan became household names because of their excellent collaborations and melody.
The popularity of Kumar Sanu, can be attributed to a great extent to Nadeem Shravan, for their strong preference of him and also be said for the opposite, as if it wasn't for Sanu, Nadeem-Shravan would never have been popular.
Nadeem Shravan tended to prefer only one lyricist, Sameer, and as lead singer, Kumar Sanu. However later they did try other singers to add variety.
They have proved their versatility by composing music for films like Subash Ghai’s Pardes and Priyadarshan’s Hungama.
[edit] Singers
Major Hindi playback singers such as Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, Vinod Rathod, Anuradha Paudwal, S.P. Balasubrahmaniyam and many others have sung under their baton. Nadeem tried his hand at singing, by releasing an album in 1995, called Sayesha. Tips cassetets released this audio.
In the late 90s, they began using singers such as K. S. Chitra, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Babul Supriyo, Hariharan, Abhijeet, and Alisha Chinoy at times, but they still kept their mainstream singers for the most part.
[edit] Plagiarism
Nadeen Shravan, like many Indian composers, have also been known to take "inspirations" from other Indian and international composers Some examples of their plagerisms incude the "Come September" tune they copied for their film Raja, or Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan's song in Raja Hindustani, or "Gawah hai chand tare gawaha" hai from Damini, copied from an African song. Or the song Ya Mustafa ya mustafa in Atish, lifted from an Egytian track. But the duo manage to get away with it, by sheer denial.
Their tunes and orchestration was a source of inspiration for many other composers. For example their song “Sochenge Tumhe Pyar..” is copied for a song in Tamil movie Aaha. This song is sung by legendary singers Hariharan and Chithra.
Recently released song “Salaam..” from the movie Umrao Jaan (2006) Bears an uncanny similarity to Nadeem Shravan's song, “Dhoom machi hai…”, from the 2002 film, Ansh.
[edit] Awards
Nadeem Shravan have won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the following films: Ashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991) Deewana (1992) & Raja Hindustani (1996). They won Screen Award for movie Pardes.
[edit] Gulshan Kumar Murder
In 1997, the duo ran into negative publicity when Nadeem, while on vacation in London, England, was named as the man behind the murder of his former mentor, record executive Gulshan Kumar (the boss of T-Series Music Company), back in India, by the investigating police and arrest warrants were issued against him. He was said to have paid an underworld Don for carrying out this task. His passport was revoked, and to avoid arrest, he stayed back in England.
They made a come back of sorts with new comer films like Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, Raaz etc, but failed to reach their former heights.
They have again proved their talent by hit albums like Raaz, Ek Rishta, Kassor, Yeh Dil Ashiqana, Andaaz & so many other albums.
Nadeem remained in the UK and, despite the immense geographical distance between England and India, he and Shravan continued to make music together. But they later split after Dosti: Firends Forever.
Their insistence on sticking to only one lyrisist (Sameer) and male singer (Kumar Sanu) made them less versatile, thus churning out one brand of music, time and again, which has led to them losing out to more talented composers like Anu malik, A R Rehman etc.
[edit] The Duo Split
As per the latest information, the duo have split, due to Shravan's apparent disinterest in continuing with his music, and instead focusing on his son's acting career. Another reason cited is probably the distance between the two.
[edit] Nadeem - Shravan all set to return together
As per the latest news Nadeem Shravan will be coming back for a movie called RAAZ2.
[edit] Nadeem is Into Selling Perfumes:
After the music director duo Nadeem–Shravan parted ways, the latter continued with his career in the film industry; while Nadeem it is learnt took up an alternate line of work. Apparently he launched a perfume collection company Winterpark Paris Parfums and today both Nadeem and his daughter are concentrating totally on their perfume brand which is called Nadeem Frances Parfums, for they want to make it an international brand, marketing it not only in London, Europe and USA, but also in the Middle East. Being a British citizen, Nadeem is fortunate to have got a lot of help from the British Ministry of Industries. The perfume will hit the markets very shortly.
