N.M.E. Combatants (Kirby)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

N.M.E. Combatants (Nightmare Battalion in Japanese) are fictional characters from the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. They appear in various episodes and appear to be very common monsters, plus there are several of them. Their type is Zako, which explains that Kirby seems to have been able to defeat them all quite easily. There are many different types of N.M.E. Combatants, the first four kinds which are monsters.

[edit] Mini-Monsters

Mini-Monsters

These mini-monsters are always capable of causing lots of trouble for their size. They tend to invade everywhere they go, and be really annoying to people.

They have so far appeared in two episodes:

  • Oh no! The Search for the Soldier's House (A Blockbuster Battle) - In this episode they make a brief appearance in the beginning of the episode, and when "Now that we know your opponent is Kirby, all our monsters have new, improved attack powers." says the NME Salesman to King Dedede, that's when they start pounding on their own salesman until they stop, and he says, "See what I mean?"
  • Majuu Hunter Knuckle Joe! (Monster Management) - Knuckle Joe supplies King Dedede with multitudes of these mini-monsters and Kirby inhales them all as they invade both King Dedede's castle and Cappy Town.

[edit] Chess Monsters

The chess monsters are only seen in one episode, that episode being "What?! Showdown with Lord Meta Knight", aired in the USA as "Kirby's Duel Role". Interestingly, the chess monsters seem to not only be based on royalty and real chess pieces, they also seem to be based on various legendary mythical creatures like Kappa. You see them in Kabu's flashback to when Nightmare put out a sphere that stabbed his finger with a sword, as in when he made a monster that wouldn't obey his orders.

[edit] Kaiju-esque Monsters

Kaiju-esque Monsters
Kaiju-esque Monsters

These are the monsters you always see in Meta Knight's flashbacks. Each of these monsters can be an arthropod, sea creature, mammal, or dragon. They appear to be the main monsters in the Nightmare's arsenal, and are famous for having ended their war with the Star Warriors in their favor.

Interestingly, the monsters seem to be based on various Kaiju, monsters, or other characters from other multimedia. For example, there's the walrus-looking monsters, which may resemble the Kaiju Gorath, the Digimon Ikkakumon, and/or the Pokémon Walrein. The pterodactyl-looking monsters seem to be based on Gyaos from the Gamera series, and the massive silver dragons seem to bear a distinct resemblance to Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Red-Eyes Black Dragon.

The monsters have so far appeared in these episodes:

  • Secret of the Star Warrior (Dark and Stormy Knight) - Seen in the flashback to Meta Knight's past.
  • Knuckle Joe Arrives! (Here Comes the Son) - Seen in the Knuckle Joe's Father flashback.
  • Visiting Ninja, Benikage! (Ninja Binge) - Seen in the flashback with the ninjas and Yamikage.
  • Loyalty! Sword and Blade (Sword and Blade, Loyal and True/Hour of the WolfWrath) - Seen briefly in the beginning of Sword Knight and Blade Knight's flashback to when they first met Meta Knight.
  • Viva! Welcome to Dede-Vegas (Abusement Park) - They're seen in the command center in Nightmare's Fortress. When Kirby is uploaded to Nightmare Enterprises after inhaling Walky and becoming Mike Kirby, the monsters are about to come at him with their jaws open, but they can't because Kirby is singing so loud that they soon explode, and the Salesguy can't stand it and decides to send Kirby back to Dreamland.
  • Knuckle Joe Escapes! (Masher 2.0) - Seen with Masher 2.0. Despite the injuries he got from it, Knuckle Joe clobbers them all one by one with his series of Smash Punches and Vulcan Jabs.

[edit] Unnamed Monster Spirits

Unnamed Monster Spirits are fictional characters that appear in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. They have not at all appeared in any anime episodes, but they are seen in that 2nd opening of the original Japanese version.

There are several of these unnamed monster spirits, all of them easily being defeated by Kirby by being inhaled by him. It starts in the middle of the opening when you see King Dedede and Escargoon opening a birthday present for the king. As soon as they unwrap the present, whole hordes of tiny little maniacal-looking spirits pop out of the box, much to their surprise. Kirby inhales all of the spirits, defeating them all, though not getting any abilities from them.

The unnamed monster spirits appear to be very common monsters, like the mini-monsters that caused trouble in Cappy Town in the episode "Monster Management", and the monsters you always see in Meta Knight's flashbacks

[edit] Destrayers

Destrayers
Destrayers

Destrayers (sometimes called Destrayas) are massive intergalactic spaceships that look like flying saucers sent by Nightmare Enterprises to wreak havoc. There is an endless supply of them, and thousands of them protect Nightmare's Fortress. They attack by shooting fireballs from underneath themselves or lasers from the guns on their fronts.

Three of the Destrayers help the Halberd get inside Nightmare's hideout. They had been stolen by and are piloted by Kirby's allies Sirica, Knuckle Joe, Arthur, Falspar, Noisurato, and Dragato. Destrayers appear only in the final episodes.

In Kirby Air Ride, there is a UFO that appears in one of the events in the City Trial mode that looks strikingly like a Destrayer.

[edit] Air Riders

Air Riders

Air Riders are round, ninja-like warriors riding on various different kinds of Air Ride machines like the ones from Kirby Air Ride, each one carrying a different weapon. The Air Ride machines they ride are the Formula Star, the Rocket Star, the Winged Star, and the Shadow Star. Their weapons include flamethrowers, missile launchers, batons, gold maces, and endless supplies of razor-sharp tops.

Some of them can be deployed from Destrayers and they patrol Nightmare Enterprises' headquarters. They appear only in the final episodes. In the 100th and very last episode, all Air Riders appearing in it carry all the same weapons as the one the single Rocket Star Rider carries in the final two-parter, "Air-Ride-in-Style", (which is the beginning of the final episodes, and was not only also aired as a sponsor for the Kirby Air Ride game, but was also released with the other three final episodes as the direct-to-video film Kirby: Fright to the Finish) plus, they carry the missile launchers that were mentioned before as well. Their missile launchers look similar to their flamethrowers, except that instead of flames, they shoot missiles.
