The N25 road is a National Primary Route in the Republic of Ireland, forming the route from Cork to Waterford City and Rosslare Europort. This is also part of the E30 European route.

[edit] The Route

The section of the route around Cork city forms the Southern Ring ring road dual-carriageway. One end of this road starts at the southwest of the city, at the point where the N22 turns north towards the Poulavone Roundabout in Ballincollig. The N25 then progresses to the intersection of the Bandon and Bishopstown Roads. The N22 which bypasses Ballincollig runs further west around the city from the end of the N25.

The Southern Ring runs east, through the Kinsale Road Interchange, a grade-separated interchange, and often referred to as the Magic Roundabout. Here the N25 meets the N27 road to Cork International Airport (Kinsale Road) and South Link to the city centre. Further east the road also passes Douglas and meets the N28 road to Ringaskiddy (Carrigaline Road). From here the road passes under the River Lee through the Jack Lynch Tunnel. On the 4th of August 2006, a 2.5km flyover of the Kinsale Road Roundabout was opened to traffic 6 months ahead of schedule. The project cost 55 million euro and consists of 3 lanes eastbound, 2 lanes west-bound and four off-ramps connecting the dual-carriageway to the roundabout. The opening of this flyover now allows traffic to flow continuously from the Jack Lynch Tunnel to the Sarsfield Road Roundabout without stopping. Work has already begun on building flyovers over the Sarsfield Road and Bandon Road Roundabouts.

North of the tunnel, the Southern Ring ends at an interchange with the N8 road to Dublin and the N8 to the city centre. From here the N25 runs east as the East Cork Parkway dual-carriageway, with interchanges for Fota Island and Cóbh, and also Carrigtohill. The next major destination on the route is Midleton. The dual-carriageway ends after bypassing Midleton, with an ordinary two-lane road continuing east to Youghal. At Youghal a single carriageway bypass completed in 2003, this brings the road around the west of the town to the northern side of Youghal. Here the road crosses the River Blackwater into County Waterford.

Northeast of this, the road was widened as part of the N25 Kinsalebeg project, this consisted of widening of 3.5 kilometres of single carriageway to include a hard shoulder on both sides of the road. The route passes Dungarvan, before reaching Waterford City. Here the route approaches from the south west. It meets the Outer Ring Road R710 on the outskirts of the city and the Inner Ring Road R709 near the Regional Sports Centre. It then passes into the centre of the city, crossing Rice Bridge over the River Suir. It leaves the north side of the city at Ferrybank, the road turning east again, meeting the N29 road to the Port of Waterford. From Waterford, the N25 moves north to cross the River Nore into County Wexford further up its estuary at New Ross. East of the town, the N30 diverges and connects northeast to Enniscorthy on the N11 Dublin–Wexford route. The N25 continues east to Wexford and meets the end of the N11 road east of the town. The N25 skirts the edge of the town around to the south and passes west of Rosslare to reach Rosslare Harbour.

[edit] Under Construction

From 2010, the Waterford City Bypass (NRA Project Tracker) will alter the route of the N25 in the vicinity of Waterford city. Beginning at Kilmeaden, to the west of the city, it will pass the Woodstown historic settlement, before crossing the River Suir (via a cable stay bridge of about 475m in length) between Gracedieu (Co. Waterford) and Grannagh (Co. Kilkenny). The N25 will meet the N9 and N24 at the Grannagh interchange, before joining the existing N25 east of Slieverue. The bypass will connect to the Outer Ring Road and existing N25 via a road known as the Western Link. (The bypass as a whole will contain 23km of dual carriageway* and 14km of single carriageway.)

  • Documentation released 15th January 2007 Ref: Department of Transport, indicate that the 23km of the N25 route Waterford Bypass will be designated Motorway; hence the new section will become the M25 Motorway!
