N-Acetylglutamic acid (abbreviated NAcGlu) is biosynthesized from glutamic acid and acetyl-CoA by the enzyme N-acetylglutamate synthase. The reverse reaction, hydrolysis of the acetyl group, is catalyzed by a specific hydrolase. NAcGlu activates carbamoyl phosphate synthase in the urea cycle.
