Nørre Djurs municipality

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nørre Djurs municipality ("Northern Djursland") is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 237 km², and has a total population of 7.663 (2005). Its mayor is Jens Peter Jellesen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The site of its municipal-council is the town of Glesborg. Other towns in the municipality are the beach towns of Bønnerup Strand, Fjellerup Strand, and Gjerrild Nordstrand, and the towns of Stokkebro and Voldby.

Neighboring municipalities are Rougsø to the west, Midtdjurs to the southwest, and Grenaa to the south. Because the municipality is located on the northeast corner of the peninsula known as Djursland, it is surrounded by water on two side: to the north is Ålborg Bay (Ålborg Bugt) and beyond that the Kattegat; and to the east is the Kattegat.

By January 1, 2007 Nørre Djurs municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be combined with existing Grenaa and Rougsø municipalities, along with the eastern part of Sønderhald municipality to form the new Norddjurs municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 661 km² and a total population of 34,382 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
