First appearance | Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony |
N°1 is an apprentice warlock demon (imp) Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony from the Artemis Fowl series by Irish fiction author Eoin Colfer.
N°1 is a bit of an oddball, even for a warlock. He detests many demon traditions, including eagerness to warp, discrimination against imps, a demon never knowing his/her mother, eating meat raw, etc. He had his first taste with magic in a dispute with Leon Abbot, when he turned a wooden poker from the fireplace into stone and penetrated Abbot's armor. He is always questing for the she-demon who is his mother. He was suspicious of Leon Abbot from the beginning, who tried to have him killed, or at least stranded in another time period.
He was kidnapped by Minerva Paradizo, Billy Kong, and Juan Soto. Before he was liberated, N°1 developed the complete gift of tongues in a conversation with Billy Kong. He was liberated by Artemis and his allies, and later played a part in saving both Minerva and Hybras. He used his power of "Gargoyle's Touch" to free Qwan, and was one of the 5 in the magic circle that brought Hybras back to Earth at the end of the book. He allowed Queffor to seize complete control of Leon Abbot's body, to the delight of the newly freed warlock. Before he became a warlock, he was known as "runt", because he was the oldest imp.
His mentor is Qwan. N°1 is the most powerful warlock Qwan says that he had ever seen. According to Qwan, he could "melt your brains" (implied at Foaly, who was scratching his (Nº1's) chin). Foaly once said that he sounded like a cheap romance novel, as he talks with medival vocabulary learned from the book Leon Abbot brought to Hydras and the fact he used an over-romanticized phrase in front of him ("...I have no idea where we are and where we're going, but I already feel more at home than I ever have.") When agitated, Number One uses a lot of synonyms to release the stress felt. He also has a soft spot for a demoness with red markings, whom he believes might be his mother.
