[edit] Optical disc writing request
Since you seem to be well-versed on the subject ([1] and particularly [2]), would you mind also expanding the coverage of the physical process of disc writing (perhaps at optical disc authoring, on whose talk page I made a request for it)? The CD article talks a bit about CD-Rs and -RWs, and the DVD-R/DVD+R/etc. articles give very brief descriptions of the specific dyes and such, but I can't find any general/central description of the process(es). Thanks! --Tardis 17:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, and thanks for the challenge – I'll try to improve them if I can, once I familiarize myself with the subject more. There is already a quite thorough article on CD-R, though. Maybe I could add some similar information to the DVD-R article. Thanks anyway! Happy editings and ♥, –Mysid☎ 17:55, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Vectorize Unstructured_grid image
Great work on vectorizing all the different grid images for the Regular grid article. I wanted to clean them up, but couldn't figure it out with Gimp. I hope you'll try doing the Unstructured grid image as well. Slffea 04:53, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Sure! I'll do it on Friday when I get my hands on CorelDraw again. –Mysid☎ 07:20, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks re: Reference Desk Language questions
Hi, thanks for answering my question on the Reference Desk! The fact that a picture that I took is currently appearing on a Finnish website makes finding it all the more surreal to me. Many thanks! Phileas 17:25, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. :) Yeah, the Internet can be a mysterious place... –Mysid☎ 17:39, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] RTTY
Hi,
I read your article on RTTY and I wanted to have more information on this stuff. Actually I am trying to developp a small software to decode RTTY messages and I had a few questions to ask you.
1 : How is the message coded ? I mean I understand the global codage with two frequencies and the fact that each character are coded with 5 bits (using the Baudot code). But how the decoder knows when the message is starting ? I mean if it loses one bit how it can not shift all the message ? Is is any "starting" code at the beginning of the message ? Are there also a starting code and stop code at the beginning and the end of each group of five bits?
2 : How did you generate the signal avaiable on Wiki?
Thanks for you help, I am looking forward hearing from you soon.
You can write me at rodolphe.ardant "~at~" gmail.com
Rodlphe
- These things should indeed be explained in the articles. I thought they were... but I'll try to explain them here. I'll also reply by e-mail as you asked.
- Firstly, there are already many programs available that are able to decode and encode RTTY very well. But if you really want to create an own one:
- 1) There isn't any special code to tell when the message starts. Usually the human operator notices it when the output starts making sense (or when s/he hears it). The receiver keeps itself synchronized using the sync bits in the transmission. Every 5-bit byte is padded by a start bit and 1.5 stop bits, if I remember correctly. Knowing this, if the receiver loses a bit, it will lose the whole character, but is able to resynchronize during the next characters. You can probably find out what the start and stop bits are by examining the transmission on an FFT display.
- 2) I created it in a Linux program called gMFSK. Many such programs are available on other OS's, too – just try googling for "rtty software". –Mysid☎ 07:32, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza
Welcome, Mysid, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.
Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.
In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.
If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!
[edit] Finland_locator_map.svg
Hello, I was just wondering if you also had figured out the longitude/latitude values of the picture? I think I can manage to do that myself, but if you already have the values then it would save me a little work. Cheers and keep up the good work! --MoRsE 09:44, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- The source picture Image:Finland 1996 CIA map.jpg contains some kind of a grid, but it's not rectangular so I find it difficult to come up with a function which would convert from degrees to pixels. But I'm working on it. :) –mysid☎ 10:24, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- I can try to to estimate the geographical location of the bottom corners. It will be fairly simple to transform the the map by using the 24th meridian as the mean meridian and do a projection change to a more suitable projection...but I must say that it would have been so much easier if the world was flat. :) --MoRsE 10:46, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Yorkshire.gif
Hi Mysid!
I just spotted your change to my userpage of the gif image to the newer svg one. I have just been through my talk pages and archives to remove others. I don't know if you are engaged in clearing all uses of the image out? But if so note that User:Yorkshire Phoenix (194.203.110.127) used the image in his talk page signature when leaving messages. He was a prolific writer, so you will find a considerable amount of multiple entries on a large number of separate talk pages. His work currently has him overseas, in a hot and dusty country, so he may be off-line for a few months. Richard Harvey 11:45, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't change its numerous appearances on talk pages so as not to cause false alarms about new messages to a number of people. :) But I've now removed the speedy deletion tag, and maybe I'll come up with a solution. –mysid☎ 13:20, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Again! I have just finished replacing all the instances of Image:Yorkshire.gif with Image:Flag of Yorkshire (Flag Institute).svg. The .gif image now has no links other than categories, so you can re-nominate it for a speedy delete. Richard Harvey 17:17, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks for the help. –mysid☎ 17:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Forgot to mention. The flag is not actually an official Yorkshire flag. I have updated the Image description information on the commons image page to match the details stated in the FOTW website. Richard Harvey 18:18, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for so much for updating Gray1130 and Gray768 -- they now look much better at large sizes. If you're ever looking for other images that could use a similar treatment, there is a good list available at List of images and subjects in Gray's Anatomy (right hand column). --Arcadian 17:02, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the list! I'll perhaps draw some more in the future, if they are in need of a redraw and if the amount of work needed is reasonable. –mysid☎ 08:51, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- On Image:Gray727.svg -- I just noticed that at the bottom, it reads "Inf. Temp. Gurys", where "Gurys" should be "Gyrus". If you get a moment, could you update the image? --Arcadian 15:51, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] commons:Image:Flag of Ingushetia.svg
Dear Mysid. This image is not correct. The sun beams must be turned to other side. See Vector-Image.com and Official site of Ingushetia. Can you improve this image? Truly yours,--Alex Spade 10:58, 2 December 2006 (UTC) (commons:User:Alex Spade).
- It is indeed incorrectly drawn. Thank you very much for noticing! I have now uploaded a corrected version. –mysid☎ 12:21, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Giant-alien-force-cover.png)
Thanks for uploading Image:Giant-alien-force-cover.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr.) 02:33, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- The image has been replaced by Image:SnaresGiantAlien.jpg, and its deletion is OK by me. Thanks for informing me. –mysid☎ 09:44, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] X chromosome ideogram - Xq28
You made the X chromosome ideogram, correct? I found it when I was looking things up to expand the Xq28 article, and I notice that marker doesn't appear on the diagram. I'm not sure what this means. Could you clarify, please? Respond here or on my talk page. LeaHazel : talk : contribs 12:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I made it after an original drawing by the National Library of Medicine (http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/chromosome=X). The q28 marker is most probably left out to save space. –mysid☎ 12:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Congratulations
You're now an admin. Have fun using the new tools to help keep the project improving. Use them as wisely as you can, especially the blocking which my have the possibility of the greatest negative consequences. However, there are plenty of clear cases so dig in to help clear out the backlogs. Finally re-read the policies as needed, and don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure. Again, congrats. - Taxman Talk 17:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

This article. You shouldn't have deleted it. Even though it was created by a vandal. I think it may be a real school, and I will be willing to research it and create a proper article on it. Retiono Virginian 17:39, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to see a proper one, and you can still create it. Sorry for being so hasty. –mysid☎ 17:41, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help over at CAT:CSD
Hi, and congrats on your promotion! Per this discussion, I'm dropping a friendly note to some of the recently-promoted admins requesting help with speedy deletions. I am not an administrator, so if you don't feel comfortable diving into deletions - or if you need more info - please don't come to me, but I'm sure that Cyde Weys would be happy to guide you if you want to help. Any help is great, but I'm sure that Cyde and others would deeply appreciate it if you could put the page on your watchlist and do a bit of work there on a regular basis? Maybe weekly? Thanks in advance! Anchoress 18:27, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion! I have been clearing the CSD backlogs almost daily, and currently I'm heading for my 1000th deleted image. :) Today and yesterday have been a bit quiet though – but I'll get back to it soon. –mysid☎ 20:27, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
