[edit] How the site works
Launched in October 2005.[2], the site has grown in popularity through viral marketing and media interest generated by the involvement of Sarah Beeny. The unique selling point of the site is that dating profiles can be created not only by the user but also by third parties, the idea being that you can sign up your friends. Where a profile is created by a third party, it must be reviewed by the user before it appears on the site: a third party can not sign a user up without their consent.
There is no cost for the creation of these profiles, however for full functionality of the site including the ability to send messages to other members requires a subscription. In February 2007 the cost of a subscription was £23.50 inclusive of VAT for a period of 4 calendar months [3].
In January 2007, The People newspaper announced that Talkback Thames were in discussions with Sarah Beeny to front a TV spin-off dating show based on the website [4].
[edit] My Single Friend Limited
mysinglefriend.com is owned by My Single Friend Limited, a company registered in England in August 2004. Sarah Beeny and her husband Graham Swift each own 25% of total shares. The company was the brainchild of Sarah and her childhood friend Amanda Christie. Amanda and her husband James Barnes each own 25% of the business. Amanda is the company's Managing Director, and James is the company's Technical Director. Audited accounts for the period ending February 2006 showed a total loss of £27,229. It should be noted that turnover for the company was £0, which would suggest these losses represent start-up costs before the business commenced trading.
