A great article though.
[edit] How she became "Loy"
The article mentions her birth surname as Williams and describes how she go her first name, but never mentions how she became "Loy". Does anyone know?
- There is no particular reason given in her autobiography other than it sounded "exotic". I'll try to find something, because that's a good question. Rossrs 06:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
- OK, my last comment is not entirely true. I've gone through the biography and this is Myrna Loy's recollection in a nutshell. Around 1925 she was working with a group of writers and artists and they thought the name "Williams" was too plain. Someone came up with "Myrna Lisa", after the famous painting. Myrna said that such a name would be embarassing. They kept throwing around names and one of the group shouted "Myrna Loy". Myrna was not entirely convinced but the name stuck. As an interesting footnote, some of her Welsh friends (Loy was of Welsh descent and Williams is a very Welsh name) refused to acknowledge her as Loy. She says that Richard Burton and Emlyn Williams would always introduce her as "Miss Williams". The studios early in her career thought the name was exotic - she was kind of typecast in Asian roles and as temptresses for quite a while, so the name worked pretty well for her. So there you go! At some point I will add a very shortened version of this, into the article. Rossrs 13:00, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
