MyBulletinBoard (abbreviation: MyBB) is a free, visible source bulletin board system software package developed by the MyBB Group. It is written in PHP, using MySQL databases to store data and is comparable to other forum software. A demo forum can be found here.

MyBB contains the majority of standard features found in bulletin board software today.

Key features include ease of installation, customizability, and an extensive control panel for both users and administrators. As this software is developed in PHP and MySQL, which are freely available, the forum software can work on most servers that support PHP and MySQL.

[edit] Customizability

MyBB allows full customization of the front end of the board through the extensive use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). However, users do not need extensive knowledge of stylesheets to customize their board thanks to the built in theme editor in the web-based Administration Control Panel (Admin CP). Themes can also be imported and exported easily from forum to forum.

Furthermore, MyBB stores all of the layout HTML markup used to generate pages as templates in the database which can be edited using the template editor in the Admin CP allowing complete presentation customization.

MyBB is open to user created modifications, or abbreviated as "mods", which can add expanded functionality, cosmetic effects, improvements, and more. Plugins, one type of modification, allow for extra features to be easily installed and un-installed on the forum. This allows plugin authors to easily package custom code to be executed within the MyBB core code to create these extra features, and also allows forum administrators to easily add and remove extra features, without having to modify the PHP code. The plugin system has "hooks" throughout the board, and even in the Admin CP, which lets plugin authors to add different things to those hooks.

MyBB Mods, the official modifications site for the MyBB software, has a collection of modifications and themes available for download. The site also has a forum for discussion, development, and support specifically for these modifications.
