"My Prerogative" is a 1988 single by R&B singer Bobby Brown (see 1988 in music). The second single from Brown's second solo album Don't Be Cruel, "My Prerogative" was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and is among Brown's most successful recordings. The song was covered in 2004 by Pop singer Britney Spears for her Greatest Hits: My Prerogative compilation, and released the song as a single during the third quarter of 2004. It was also covered by British punk/Indie band Selfish Cunt, albeit under the title "Bobby".

[edit] Overview

"My Prerogative" was written by Brown with new jack swing pioneer Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin, the song's producer. In the 2004 cover, Britney Spears penned an additional verse: "People can take everything away from you / But they can never take away your truth / But the question is / Can you handle mine?" The song's lyrics reflected Brown's bad-boy image, and were representative of the new jack swing sound popular in the late-1980s. Following the top ten success of "Don't Be Cruel," "My Prerogative" earned Gold sales, and became Brown's first and only number one single on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. The track was also a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and reached the top ten of the Hot Dance Club Play chart.

On the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Bobby Brown's original version rocketed 61-45, the week of November 5, 1988, just as "Don't Be Cruel" was descending from its two-week stint in the Top 10. "My Prerogative" steadily climbed the charts, and was stalled at #2 for three weeks, under Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", before it finally reached #1 the week of January 14, 1989, becoming the first new #1 of 1989.

[[Image:MyPrerogativeCap.jpg|thumb|left|Scene from Spears' music video Britney Spears' cover was not as successful in the United States, since it did not manage to chart into the Billboard Hot 100. Yet, it peaked a number one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles or to the position of number 101. However, her version did peak at number two on the Hot Digital Tracks, and at number one or the top ten in several contries, making her version much successful internationally. Spears' cover was more successful than Brown's in the United Kingdom, where it sold a total of 180,000 copies. Digital downloads did not count toward the Billboard Hot 100 until early 2005, otherwise the single could have been more successful in the United States.

The music video for Britney Spears' version of "My Prerogative" was directed by Jake Nava. It depicts a wedding reception party for Britney Spears and her real-life husband at the time Kevin Federline. Her music video was well-received and it was later chosen by Rolling Stone magazine as the best music video of 2004. MuchMusic's Fromage chose it as the worst music video of 2004.

The song is being re-released in Europe in March 2007, currently at #117.
