"My Friend of Misery" is the 11th song from Metallica's 1991 eponymous album. This song has never been played live in its entirety, but Jason Newsted often used the riff in his live bass solos. Newsted initially wanted the song to be the instrumental of the album, continuing the Metallica tradition of including an instrumental in all of their previous albums. The lyrics describe an outsider view of someone reveling in self-pity and maintaining a pessimistic view of the entire world.
