Mwepu Ilunga

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mwepu Ilunga is a former defensive footballer from Zaire (now DR Congo) who was most famous for running out of a defensive wall during a FIFA World Cup football match against Brazil and kicking the ball away before the ball was in play [1].

The match took place during the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Zaire were then the first African team to qualify for the World Cup finals, however during the tournament the players discovered they would not be paid [2]. Ilunga rushed out of the defensive wall after the whistle had been blown for a free kick to Brazil, but before the ball had been played.m He subsequently kicked the ball away, for which he was yellow carded by the referee. The match ended 3-0 to Brazil [3].

Ilunga still lives in the DR Congo where he has been described as "living in poverty" [4].
