The MV Leif Ericson (built in Fosen, Norway in 1991) is a ferryboat now operating the 178 kilometer route between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Channel-Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland. Its original operation was between Dover, England and Calais, France, where it was named the Stena Challenger. Upon being bought in 2001 by Marine Atlantic, it was renamed the MV Leif Ericson in honour of the 1000th anniversary of Leif Ericson, first European to set foot in the New World. The vessel has a capacity of 500 passengers and 300 passenger vehicles. Also operating the vessel's current route is the MV Caribou, while her sister, the MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood, operates the route between North Sydney and Argentia, Newfoundland.
