[edit] History
MV Clansman was specifically designed to operate on Calmac's Oban-Castlebay/Lochboisdale and Oban-Coll/Tiree services, replacing the MV Lord of the Isles.
She was launched on 27th March 1998 at Appledore Shipbuilders in Devon, and entered service four months later. As the second largest vessel in the fleet she brought new levels of capacity and passenger comfort to the route.
At 99m in length, she is the largest vessel that can safely navigate the numerous channels on her routes.
The main complaint by passengers travelling on the Clansman was her lack of open deckspace. The design of the ship was such that exterior areas for passengers came at a premium.
In 2003, Calmac remedied this problem when the ship went for her annual overhaul, an extension would be added; above the area aft of her bar.
Clansman has an almost identical sister ship, MV Hebrides, which was built in 2000 to almost the same specification.
