[edit] Geography

Muzaffarpur is located at 26.12° N 85.4° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 47 meters (154 feet).

Muzaffarpur is a rapidly growing city. The population explosion in the last decade has been phenomenal. Thousands of villagers migrated to this town from nearby villages in the rapid uncontrolled urbanization in post-independence India. However, this has led to a host of problems, the most prominent of them being drainage and sanitation. Due to a saucer-like topography, drainage has always been a problem. In recent years all urban problems have been greatly compounded by the population explosion, unregulated growth, lack of quality engineering and technological expertise, and most notably, due to extremely poor governance, inefficiency, rampant corruption, inactive policing, lawlessness, and lack of a work culture at many levels of the government machinery. The downtown areas of Muzaffarpur are known as Kalyani Chowk and Saraiyagunj. Both areas are densely populated with small shops selling a plethora of goods and services, with colourful settings and buzzing with large crowds. Motijheel is the main shopping area. Chakkar Maidan is a place where there is small settlement of the Indian Army & nearby are popular schools like Prabhat Tara. Popular temples are the Kali temple, Garib Sthan (Shiva Temple), Devi Mandir (Durga). Apart from these, there are several old temples in the town. There are also large and small temples of other religious communities like Sikhs, Muslims, Budhists, Jains, Christians, etc.

Climate- The summer is extremely hot and humid (40 deg C,90 % Max.) and winters are pleasant (6 deg C). There are few historical places to visit nearby such as Vaishali (claimed as first-ever Democratic State in the world) and one of the places (of Buddhism and Jainism importance - 35 km.). Outing- Flood plains in green settings dotted with sweet water ponds ,meandering glacier fed rivulets and innumerable fruit orchards are ideal for picnics. The city has a water table just 20 ft. below the ground and is green round the year. Hotels -There area few hotels with A.C. and non-A.C.rooms.

[edit] Economy

It is world famous for exporting lichi (a fruit). It is also famous for sugar cane and the district has a few sugar mills - now old and dilapidated.
