Mutants (The Hills Have Eyes)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mutants or Hill People are the fictional villains in The Hills Have Eyes film series.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the original series, there were no mutants. The remake has the Hill People as mutants, who were created when a group of miners and their families from a small mining community refused to leave their desert town in New Mexico, when the U.S. Government wanted to test nuclear bombs on the surrounding land. To escape the bombs, the miners and their families hid in the mines. As a result, the nuclear radiation from the resulting fallout mutated their DNA and subsequent generations were born with deformities.

[edit] Hades

Hades is described as being, "huge. The leader of, and the largest of, the mutants - has a face sort of like a mandrill; truly terrifying." Hades is being portrayed by Michael Bailey Smith, who portrayed Pluto in the previous film. The name Hades represents his role in the film as being a leader with the same name as the mythological figure, Hades. The mythological figure is also, ironically, known as Pluto.

[edit] Hansel

Hansel, is described as being in his, "30s, huge and hulking, but with a childlike demeanor - an enormous simpleton. He helps Amber and Napoleon when they're trying to rescue Missy - but it later turns out he's not as innocent as he seems..." The name Hansel may be a reference to the children's tale Hansel and Gretel because of his "childlike demanor"

[edit] Chameleon

Chameleon, is described as, "A bald mutant, large, and muscular. His skin is the same color as the rocks, which he uses as a sort of camoflauge. Along with Hades, the most prominent of the mutants. He grabs Missy, drags her into the mines and holds her hostage." Chameleon's name is a direct reference to the chameleon animal, because of his extra-long tongue and his ability to blend in with the rocks.

[edit] Grabber

The last mutant is Grabber, described as "A scarred, hard-muscled, but nearsighted and relies on his sense of smell in the dark. He attacks Amber, only to escape with the help of Hansel." Grabber's name is an obvious reference to his nearsightedness and that he grabs to find his victims.
