Criticism of the news

What do those news have anything to do with music?! They have more to do with celebrity life.--Deadworm222 13:30, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

Message board

Does this portal has any message board or local willage pump? mikka (t) 20:25, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

That would be this talk page, I guess. Or? / Habj 00:23, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Anniversary pages

I'd like to recommend making an aniversary subpage for every month. That way they can be edited as needed without loosing info. The month variable could be used to control the display, thus making it work automagically. The code would look something like this:

{{Portal:Music/box-header|Anniversaries|Portal:Music/Anniversaries/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|}}
{{Portal:Music/Anniversaries/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}}}
{{Portal:Music/box-footer|}}

The "current" month of October would be kept at Portal:Music/Anniversaries/October for example. (I've copied the text to that page as an example and for the other existing months.).

And here it is implemented:

  • This works really well. I think we should also have something like this for the Featured Article like some other portals do. Madder 23:19, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Did you know

Do the rules for this main Wikipedia:Did you know apply to other DYKs such as this portals (Portal:Music/Did you know)? Hyacinth 09:15, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

To a certain extent, yes, but obviously there's not enough interest in this page right now to update the section every five days, for example. What specific policies are you referring to? TheJabberwock 02:18, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Redlinks on portal head.

Just out of curiosity, is it normal for redlinks to be present on Portal:Music? How is this different from the Main Page?

The Franz Xavier Wolfgang Mozart has been fixed, but there are a few others... --Folajimi 15:59, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

To-do

What became of the to-do list? Is the Portal done with to-do lists?

Just curious, --Folajimi 01:58, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Are you referring to the "Contribute" box? Λυδαcιτγ 02:40, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Actually, I was wondering if there was anything left to be done for the portal; not so much the box itself... Folajimi 10:17, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Oh, I see. I think it just needs updating, at least for now. I wonder how many people are actually reading it, though? Λυδαcιτγ 03:42, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
        • Just get going, "ye of little faith!" ;) If there is anything I can help with, please let me know. Cheers! --Folajimi 12:01, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
          • Well, where is the list? Are you waiting for something else? --Folajimi 00:19, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
            • Where is what list? I'm talking about the portal itself when I say "I wonder how many people are actually reading it, though?" But I'll try and get going (it's bolded on my to-do list) as soon as possible. Λυδαcιτγ 03:35, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

French Music Portal

The French Music Portal totally rips this portal to shreds. Can we rip them off? Madder 19:55, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I didn't know there was an "arms race" to see who is better. Folajimi 22:46, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
    • There isn't. It's just that portal looks and reads so much better, I think we could use some stuff from it. Madder 13:04, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Provided that the sources are GFDL-compliant, the content can be transcribed as appropriate with impunity. --Folajimi 13:18, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Improving the portal

The portal definitely needs updating. Regarding the featured article, which hasn't been changed in over 3 months, I was wondering how a featured article was chosen? Perhaps a list should be drawn up here, and a new featured article put up every month?

Also, about the introduction, which comes across as a bit stern, especially compared with the introduction of the French Wikipedia's Music Portal, which was a featured portal there. I think we should use their introduction, which is:

What is music?
Music is an art and at the same time a science.
It is an art since from the dawn of time, humanity has known music. In magical incantations, in ritual dances, etc.
It is a science since it is restricted by norms and scientific and mathematical rules.
In all communities, there exists an ancient and traditional music alongside a music which is taught in schools and conservatoires.
But whatever its nature and audience, music touches us and moves us, it makes us think and it makes us dream.

(Cue soppy violin music). I think this introduction is great, and I think we should use it. Madder 19:01, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I concur with your idea of adopting their format/framework. The teal look definitely works for me. Perhaps we should push for making it the official colour for Music-related templates?
    • There seem to be disparate pages for requests regarding music-related articles. At the moment, I have yet to come up with a plan for how to pull these pages into the portal, but I think it will be a worthwhile endeavour. Besides, I am somewhat disturbed by the amount of listcruft which has crept into those pages over time. Any thoughts? Folajimi 20:21, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
      • I've already improved the visual appearance of the portal, but I certainly think we could make it look even nicer. I agree the portal needs to be made more useful and become a proper hub for music-related articles on Wikipedia.Madder 21:06, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
        • How about a new segment for "On this day in music history..."? --Folajimi 23:06, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
          • That sounds good, but quite similar to 'Anniversaries'? Also, should we revamp the introduction as mentioned above?
Regarding the featured article section I think it would be a good idea to have a 12 month cycle, the same as what the Anniversaries section uses. People could suggest articles here, and then a list could be drawn up for the next 12 months, with one article every month - or if there are more suggestions, perhaps even more frequently. Madder 23:49, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
  • To the pair of questions you asked up front, my answer is yes. As for the proposed cycling scheme. I would look for notable events to include as soon as I can find them.
Regarding birthdays, I have a suggestion – there is a rather lengthy list of birthdays for musicians I have stashed somewhere. Is it possible to have a subsection or subpage for birthdays? I would like to have them included as well. --Folajimi 00:11, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
  • There are a few birthdays mentioned in the anniversaries section which rotates, but that's only for every month. We could definitely have a seperate section for birthdays, and use a rotation system, and maybe integrate it with the "On this day in music history...", which has a nice ring to it. I don't know how many birthdays you have, but if it's one a week, that would mean creating one page for every week. The system would automatically rotate through the pages.
About the proposed cycling scheme, I mean about the featured article - is that what you mean by notable events? Madder 00:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Perhaps I misinterpreted what you meant; I just realized that the featured article has nothing to do with the month. Either way works for me.
As for birthdays, there are probably four a day... --Folajimi 00:33, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
  • You need to create a page for each day with corresponding birthdays, the page should be located as follows:
Portal:Music/Birthdays/TheMonth/TheDay
So for example, the page listing birthdays on the 21st of August would be at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Music/Birthdays/August/21
We can then add code on the portal main page to use the page for whichever day it is.Madder 00:50, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
  • It seems like I've got my work cut out for me; I have no idea how many of the subjects will be red links. It will take a while, to be sure... --Folajimi 01:02, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Suggest a Featured Article

I've set up a page for suggesting featured articles, which is also linked to on the portal main page - it's at Portal:Music/Featured_articles/Suggest. A template is also included to be added to the talk pages of candidate articles. If you know of any note-worthy music-related articles that you believe should feature on the music portal, please add them here. Madder 01:18, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

  • A demonstration would be in order. I have submitted another entry. --Folajimi 02:49, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

New colors

Any opinions? Λυδαcιτγ 19:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

I was just about to post about that when I got an edit conflict from this :-) The changes you've made are great, including the new system for news which looks much better. I'm not too sure about the colours though, I think the lighter blue colours we had before were more visually appealing and in general made things a lot clearer. The darker blue colours distract from the text itself. Madder 19:12, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Agreed. Folajimi 19:19, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
    • If it's ok can I put back the previous colour scheme? Madder 19:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Sounds fine to me. I will look into having music-related templates use the same colour. Folajimi 19:58, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
        • How would a music template work exactly? What would it do? Madder 20:00, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Make sure to change the intro background also, on the portal page itself. Λυδαcιτγ 20:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Point taken, but the teal conflicts with the lavender background and with the steel blue banner. Let's keep looking for good combinations. Λυδαcιτγ 20:08, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Definitely agree, the new box background colour and the border colour of the top box you've put there is perfect. Madder 20:13, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Good. What do you think about having the box borders the same color as the box headers? Λυδαcιτγ 22:40, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
        • Yes it looks absolutely fine. Madder 17:04, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Template proposal.

It seems that Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums have an album template, which is being used on several recordings site-wide. However, I have found the colour scheme selected for "Original albums" — orange — hurts my eyes.

I have posted a note on that project's talk page about the possible adoption of a different colour for that template. Hopefully, they will accept using a colour that is easier on the eyes, such as the one used for this page. This will help avoid duplication of effort. --Folajimi 20:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I agree using the same colour as on the music portal would be a good idea, and the orange doesn't look particularly nice. Madder 20:55, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Adding the Music Portal to the Portal browse bar

Music is such a large subject, I think it would make sense to add the Music Portal to Template:Browsebar which appears on each portal. What do you think? Madder 17:51, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it would be a very popular addition. I think Browsebar is for the very top-level groups only. Λυδαcιτγ 22:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Important Articles

Perhaps this section on the portal should be merged with the Categories section - the French Music Portal has done this, where they list each Music Category with its most important articles. They also have some good images which we could use. Madder 22:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. Folajimi 00:45, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
For now, I simply merged the two. The French idea should definitely be taken into consideration. Λυδαcιτγ 04:04, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Death

There are a ton of personalities who died this month; I've only added a few of those I am aware of. How about having a separate section for them? --Folajimi 23:44, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Bit of a grim section to have! Madder 15:55, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
    • Perhaps an obituary section would be a bit much... Anyway, the Anniversary section will probably be fine. In that case, it would be best to include information only on the "terminally unique" — the most famous or obscure, or those who died as a result of freak accidents, suicide, etc. --Folajimi 16:28, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
      • I'm also a bit worried about the use of the word 'Vital' and 'Important' in the Important topics section - some people might argue that those particular articles/categories aren't the most important/vital... it depends what you're looking for that will determine how important it is to you. Should it be rephrased perhaps? Madder 19:30, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
        • Although I agree with you, I was wondering what that section is doing there in the first place... --Folajimi 23:55, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Problems with Suggest a featured article

The Suggest a featured article page seems to be getting little attention - there hasn't been a single vote on either of the two nominations there since it started. Is there any way of sorting this? Or will dictatorship just have to be used for the final decision for July's featured article? Madder 22:09, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Perhaps. Hopefully, turnout will improve as work continues on this portal. Folajimi 01:47, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Missing image.

The image at the head of the portal is missing. At least, it appears to be so in the browser I'm using... Folajimi 00:15, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Which browser? It shows up in Firefox, Windows 98. Λυδαcιτγ 22:11, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
MoMo (Seamonkey), Gentoo. --Folajimi 23:23, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
The image is located at http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/93/Music_Portal_Banner.jpg so see if you can view it there. By the way, if you're using AdBlock, that's probably the reason. And I recommend Firefox. Madder 22:55, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps the issue is specific to MoMo; even dillo seems to load the page properly w/o issues. Folajimi 03:11, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Problem with Date of Birth section

Just noticed there's a problem with the date of birth section, at least on July 14. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/July_14 looks absolutely fine, but when rendered on Portal:Music, the last item overflows into a weird box with a dotted line around it. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Music&oldid=63033220 in case this is just for July 14. I can't see what's wrong with the code, it all looks OK to me, but clearly there's something wrong there. Madder 21:40, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

  • How about abandoning the template? Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 01:51, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Fixed. Abandon it now, after all this work? I'd rather not... Λυδαcιτγ 04:30, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Having to bring up the same issue over and over again becomes a little grating after a while... --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 13:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Did you Know section

Everything is looking really good and updated, except for the Did you Know section. Is there a way we could get this updated regularly, perhaps with some kind of rotation system, or even getting it to show random facts each time the page loads or each day? Madder 21:37, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, this is my personal contribution in this section that you can use for update:

  1. ...that, in the 1940s, the female fans of the Soviet tenor Sergei Lemeshev (pictured), often quarrelled with the fans of his rival, Ivan Kozlovsky? Entered DYK on May 30, 2006
  2. ...that an unknown manuscript of opera libretto by writer Mikhail Bulgakov was found in Isaak Dunayevsky's archive after his death in 1955? June 04, 2006
  3. ...that the symphony said to have been written in 1809 by Ukrainian landowner Mykola Ovsianiko-Kulikovsky was later proven to be a hoax? June 30, 2006
  4. ...that the first performance of Glinka's opera A Life for the Tsar (1836) was conducted by Catterino Cavos, who composed an opera on the same subject 20 years before Glinka? July 6, 2006
  5. ...that composer Veniamin Fleishman was killed at the beginning of the Second World War before he could complete his opera Rothschild's Violin, but that his teacher Dmitri Shostakovich rescued his sketches from besieged Leningrad and completed the opera? July 9, 2006
  6. ...that Russian composer Boris Sobinov was abducted from the Berlin American Zone by the NKVD and condemned to ten years in prison in the Soviet Union? July 11, 2006

    • Thanks for these facts :-) Is there a way of having a rotating system where a different fact (including the ones already on the portal page) is shown each day? And where new facts could easily be added and automatically become part of the rotating system? Madder 21:10, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Certainly. How many facts do you think we should have on each page? I can set it up when we get the details hammered out. Λυδαcιτγ 02:53, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
      • I created three pages - 1 2 3 - which should rotate. They have six facts each. Λυδαcιτγ 22:54, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
        • Looks good, but I think there's a little problem there still, <noinclude> stuff and code is appearing for me. I'm not sure how to fix it? Madder 13:46, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
          • Ok fixed it :-) Madder 11:38, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Recent FA's and Main FA

First of all, this page is looking better and better. Nice work! Question about FA's: what's the current guideline for deciding on one? Or do we even have one? Also, does the "Recent FA's" refer to FA's on the portal or on the main page? Gregorian chant just made FA status would be a good candidate for the page IMHO. Pink Floyd's been there a while. Upload classical sheet music?

For the older classical pieces, is it a copyright violation to upload musical works? For example, could I upload a Mozart's concerto sheet music and make it available to everyone? PDF's are images and WP accepts them just fine. I think this would be a great way to make music available to everyone.--Tbeatty 05:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

  • I think the copyright belongs to the publisher of the sheet music. So for example if you printed the sheet music yourself (eg. using notation software), then it would be OK. Madder 17:36, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

music by decade

Especially for "popular" genres (jazz reggae rock music-hall etc) it woudl be useful to have a groupig of articles by decade... or is it somewhere lese on wikipeida and I've missed it ? jm

  • Do you mean having articles categorised like this? You could create categories like this if they don't already exist. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Music to see if there isn't already a category there that refers to what you're suggesting. Madder 17:18, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

More anniversaries needed

Hello, just to note we need more anniversaries for the portal, in particular for the months of November, December and January - the pages for these months are currently blank, so when these months come round, there won't be anything showing on Portal:Music. Could someone add some? I'm having trouble finding some for these months. Thanks, Madder 17:21, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi Folajimi, thanks for these! :-) By the way, I've also noticed the birthday's list is also about to go blank in about a week or so because those days haven't yet been filled in - does your list of birthdays cover these days? Cheers, Madder 01:17, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. The list has been that way from the beginning; I have always worked at staying a week ahead. Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 12:27, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Anniversaries

I've discovered an amazing resource at List of musical events. Is there a way of getting some of this content to automatically appear in the anniversaries section as it gets updated? Because that would be really cool, and would solve the problem of the Anniversaries section being a bit light on content at the moment. Madder 22:13, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Music Portal revamp

Unfortunately the Music Portal failed in its nomination as a featured portal candidate. It's a shame, but a lot of good feedback was given, and looking through it now, I think a lot of improvements can still be made, aka. another total revamp. The main issues seem to be:

  • Layout: the 'Explore' box at the top is cool, but takes up too much space. Is there a way of having the same content within it, but using up space more sparingly? The other issue I have with it is what should actually go in it - reverts are always having to be made when users add things to it. How should we decide what goes in it? At the moment we're relying on some 'vital articles' list, but should we? And there seem to be other places listing recommended music articles and so on.
  • Today's Birthdays: this a really valuable resource, but it's very long, so is there a way of getting it so that just some parts from it are shown on the portal page, with a link to another page with the whole thing? Also, there are some red links within it, these shouldn't be shown on the portal page.
  • Anniversaries: For some months, the list is very short, for others, it's very very long - could the same be done as above? And the short lists should perhaps be expanded... or perhaps not?
  • Any other ideas to make the portal even better?...

Madder 15:38, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Regarding anniversaries... I noticed that birthdays were included in that list; an action which defeats the purpose of having a separate section on birthdays. Historic releases of recordings, deaths, and other notable events will be much better suited for such a category.
Regarding birthdays... One simple solution would be to create another page which contains — at most — a dozen entries for each day. Then, a link from that page to the extended page for more information. The shorter pages could then be the ones featured on the Portal's main page. (FWIW, my attention is directed at improving this category; as such, I am somewhat unavailable to hunt down information on legitimate anniversaries.)
Regarding aesthetics... Unfortunately, I am unable to comment on this matter. IMHO, it is much more important to include content at this point in time. However, if someone else is willing to spend time on that, that's fine by me.
Finally, it is unclear to me why it is important to have this portal become a "featured portal"; this has never been a factor for my involvment with the portal. --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 02:28, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
The Explore box is squatter now. I'm happy with what's in it. What other places are you referring to, Madder? Λυδαcιτγ 19:58, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi, these ideas all sound very good, and the explore box looks much better. I hope we can implement it all. Regarding featured portal, I'm not saying it's a necessity or aim - the aim of this portal is to make Music articles on Wikipedia more accessible, nothing else - but when the portal was a candidate for featured portal, some interesting criticisms came up which I think should be addressed primarily for this portal's aim of making Music articles more accessible. I think the portal's looking so much better than it used to, but it could look even better! So I hope we can resolve the issues brought up by the criticisms made and make this a truly excellent portal. Madder 03:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Browser incompatiblity?

Hi this is just to let u know that the music portal is all garbled in my particular browser. I have headings from some articles sections lying all over the page and some articles are actualy layered on top of other articles.

I'm not particularly computer savvy so unforutunatley all I can tell u is that I am running IE6 on Win XP with SP2, and that I don't usually have any problems with css layouts on other pages.

John Legend

Hi everyone! I'm an Italian Wikipedia user and I need your help since I'm going to write the articles about John Legend's albums Get Lifted and Once Again. I need to know: should I consider these two albums as the 1st and 2nd or as the 4th and 5th? I ask you this because

  • here and here there are a list of 5 albums and the chronology shows former albums, but
    • here there's the indication Years active: 2004 - present. 2004: year of Get Lifted release. Moreover,
      • here the album is indicated as the sophomore album: that is, the 2nd one.

Any help will be accepted with enthusiasm. Thanks in advance! 151.28.127.56 21:23, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Hi, this request would probably go best on the Music Noticeboard (link at the top of Portal:Music). The Music Noticeboard is for requesting help with Music-related articles, whilst this talk page is for discussing things directly related to the Music Portal. Thanks! Oops... Sorry! this page is used differently in the Italian Wikipedia... 151.28.96.25 22:42, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

I propose a split of this Portal.

I say that we split this portal into two different portals one for singers, songs, genres, etc., and another one for music theory (rhythms, instruments, notation, etc.). The portal right now seems to have a huge spectrum of topics. —Captain538[talk] 20:56, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I totally object to this proposal. It will cause duplication and confusion. Plus there are already several Music Sub-Portals. Madder 17:56, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Birthdays & Anniversaries problems

I think the Birthdays section is a really useful section of the portal, but it's just too long. Is there any way we can trim it down so that only part of it shows (with a link to the rest) and with no red links? Also, is there any way we can tie the Birthdays and Anniversaries sections in with List of musical events? To be honest, I think there's a lot of duplication going on. I think the Anniversaries and Birthdays sections should be merged into one, made shorter, and perhaps use content from List of musical events. Madder 14:58, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

The partial showing for birthdays has been implemented; Folajimi is going to start using it. Λυδαcιτγ 02:32, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
