[edit] Setup

The Mustang Cup setup is split into two stages, the Apertura or Opening and the Finalización or Closing. The apertura takes place during the first half of the year and the finalización during the second half. The Cup has three stages: the League Stage, the Group Stage, and the Playoff Stage.

[edit] The League Stage

During the league stage eighteen games, with each team playing every other team at least once. The league table is kept like a normal European league table, one point for ties three points for wins. The top eight teams after eighteen games go on to the group stage.

[edit] The Group Stage

The top eight teams of the league stage are then divided into two groups of four, with teams playing in a double round robin so that each team plays one home and one away fixture against the other teams in their group. The top team from each group then advances to the Playoff Stage.

[edit] The Playoff Stage - Final

The Playoff stage is two-games, home-and-away playoff. The team with the highest combined score after both games wins. If the game is a tie it proceeds directly to penalties. The away goals rule is not used.

[edit] Stage History and Controversy

The setup and fixtures for the Copa Munstang has changed many times. The current system was stablished in 1999. Prior to this setup, many complex fixtures and stages were used. One of the worst was the 1996-1997 cup, that actually was played for 18 months, from July 1996 to through December 1997. The excuse to make exceptionally complex cups has usually been an effort to "spice" the tournament.

Several famous Colombian coaches have expressed a dislike of the new format and several teams have been in first place throughout the entire league stage while not even reaching the final. Most notoriously America de Cali who went two years and four finalizaciones and aperturas combined leading in first place for the majority of the time and only reached the final once and never won a new title.
