[edit] Super Mario Brothers Games
- Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese version, aka The Lost Levels) - Locations in and around the Mushroom Kingdom, referred to as "worlds." These lands are not mapped. Each world has its own castle, with a Mushroom Retainer in its stead. The exception is the last world, ruled by Bowser.
- Super Mario Bros. 3 - Worlds 1-8 have their own specific rulers and are mapped out, but have no point of reference to the original games.
- Super Mario RPG - partially takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Super Mario 64 - Takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, and various other lands accessed throughout the castle.
- New Super Mario Bros. - Takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom and Koopa Kingdom.
- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - Takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, but the former is mostly in the Beanbean Kingdom.
- Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is largely centered in Rogueport, a town in the Mushroom Kingdom.
[edit] Lands apart from the Mushroom Kingdom
- Star Hill - A reoccuring area in the series, particularly the RPG games. It is a mystical place connected with the wishes of the world, as stars from the Star Road crash here to grant desires. It is known as Falling Star Hill in Japan. It appears in Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario (localized as Shooting Star Summit in the English localization), and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
- Dinosaur Land - Setting of Super Mario World. Most of the courses in Super Mario Kart also take place here. Yoshi's Island is located here.
- Sarasaland - Setting of Super Mario Land.
- Mario Land - Setting of Super Mario Land 2.
- Isle Delfino - Setting of Super Mario Sunshine , another land far from the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Land of Sub-Con - Setting of Super Mario Bros. 2 (AKA Super Mario USA in Japan).
- Star Road takes place high above the clouds, seen in Super Mario World and Super Mario RPG.
- Rainbow Road takes place in the Mario Kart series.
- Jewelry Land - Setting of Yoshi's Safari.
- Waffle Kingdom - referenced in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- Kitchen Island - seen in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.
- Vibe Island - seen in Super Princess Peach.
- Beanbean Kingdom - setting of Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. It is indicated in the game that it is separate from the Mushroom Kingdom. The Beanbean Kingdom also borders the Mushroom Kingdom.
- Star Haven - seen in Paper Mario and is also somewhere above the Mushroom Kingdom, although it may be the same location as the Star Road. It is worth noting that Star Haven houses the Star Rod in a fountain, while Nintendo's Kirby series has a Star Rod in Pop Star's Fountain of Dreams.
- Outer Space - Super Mario Galaxy seems to take place on various planetoids above Mushroom World.
[edit] Associated locations
As Mario associates with other Nintendo characters who have their own settings, the lands they inhabit can be inferred to exist in the same world as Mario.
- Donkey Kong Island - Setting of Donkey Kong Country 1-3 and Donkey Kong 64.
- Yoshi's Island - The place where Yoshi lives, it is also where he stars in all of his solo games. It was originally known as Yoster Island in Japanese, and Yo'Ster Isle in the English translation of Super Mario RPG.
- Wario - Wario resides in or near Diamond City, as seen in WarioWare Inc. However, Wario encounters other lands in Wario Land, Wario Land II, and Wario World.
- Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, etc. - Settings are often based off of those in and around the Mushroom Kingdom, such as Bowser's Castle.
- Mario Party - Each game has its own set of worlds.
[edit] Unknown locations
Older games generally consist of no known physical location, and therefore cannot be mapped.
- Donkey Kong
- Donkey Kong Jr.
- Donkey Kong 3
- Mario Bros. - Since it has been noted that the Mario Bros. were born in Brooklyn, New York, it is possible that the game could've taken place here.
- Wrecking Crew - It is noteworthy that its sequel, Wrecking Crew '98, is known to take place in the Mushroom Kingdom.
. , there is evidence in Donkey Kong Land which suggests that these games may actually have taken place on Donkey Kong Island.
