Musalia Mudavadi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi (born September 21, 1960 in Vihiga District is a Kenyan politician.

He has been an MP since 1989, when he was elected unopposed to take seat vacated by his deceased father Moses Mudavadi [1].

He was the last and shortest serving Vice-President of Kenya under Daniel Arap Moi's regime. He was appointed in an attempt, that would end in failure, to bring the Luhya tribe into the KANU camp, which had been the party of government since independence.

Mudavadi ran for Vice-President as Uhuru Kenyatta's running mate in the 2002 elections. Despite the support of the outgoing President Moi, the KANU political machine and the provincial administration, the Kenyatta/Mudavadi ticket was roundly beaten and Mudavadi lost his Sabatia parliamentary seat.

More recently Mudavadi has been making a political comeback by aligning himself with the 'No' side in the forthcoming Referendum on the proposed new Constitution. This aligns him clearly with Raila Odinga's LDP and he could become the leading Luhya politician, should Odinga and allies win the next presidential election in 2007.

He is vying for presidency at the 2007 general elections for ODM-Kenya [2], but should first beat several other presidential hopefuls allied to ODM.

As a youngster, he played rugby for Mean Machine RFC, [3].
