Murmur (speech)

A murmur is a soft-sounded and quiet utterance, often where the speaker does not want to be known. Vibration of the vocal cords is still present, making it distinct from a whisper.
Gossip and rumours, as well as dissent and mocking talk about an authority, are often described as murmurs.
