IMDb profile

Murder on a Sunday Morning is a 2001 documentary film made by French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. Its original French title is Un coupable idéal, meaning An Ideal Culprit.

The film is about a wrongful accusation. In 2000, a tourist, Mary Ann Stephens, was murdered in Jacksonville, Florida. A 15-year-old African-American teenager, Brenton Butler, was arrested and tried for murder. The prosecution's case relied heavily upon a positive identification made by the victim's husband. The film follows Butler's defense team as they defend him from a police department determined to prosecute.

The film demonstrates the unreliability of prejudiced identification techniques used by police.

The film won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature at the 74th Academy Awards in 2001.
