Multnomah Education Service District (MESD) is a district that coordinates school based events and activities throughout the school districts in Multnomah County in Oregon.

[edit] Outdoor School

MESD has operated the outdoor school program since 1966. Sixth graders throughout the districts go to 1 of 5 camps for one week. There are four main field sudies students learn each day while at Outdoor School: Water, Soil, Plants, and Animals. Also while there, students learn other manners of camp, such as communal living and dining, outdoor cooking, and many zany camp songs that have been traditional for many years.

The Milk Creek Outdoor School site is about 35 miles from the MESD office. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the site from the MESD office. This site was used years ago by our program and was know as the Adams Outdoor School site. It is located between Molalla and Colton.

The site is located on the confluence of Milk Creek and Nate Creek. The cabins are close to the dining hall. One cabin, the campfire circle and some of the field study areas are located on the terrace below the dining hall along Milk Creek. Trails and unpaved road access most of the field study areas.

This site will only have four classrooms scheduled per week because of the limited number of beds. There are 10 cabins available for student use. There are two cabins and a meeting space in most of the buildings. The bathrooms and showers for the cabins are located inside the building.

Teachers will be housed in two rooms with the Outdoor School staff. Bathrooms and showers are located in this building. Three meeting spaces and the dining hall are available for evening class meetings.

The Arrah Wanna Outdoor School site is about 40 miles from the MESD office. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the Arrah Wanna site from the MESD office, and is the farthest Outdoor School site to most schools in the MESD service area. The closest community is Welches, Oregon.

The Arrah Wanna site is located on the Salmon River, at the base of Mount Hood and the site is located on the back side of the Wildwood Recreation Area off Highway 26. The historic dining hall has hardwood floors and a stone fireplace at one end and a brick fireplace at the other end. The site is fairly level and will be the second most accessible site for wheelchairs. There is a walk to the student cabins from the dining hall. Most field study areas are located a good walk from the dining hall.

There are 12-14 cabins (6 boys and 7-8 girls) available for student use. Bathrooms and showers are located in separate buildings.

There are 8 spaces in 4 rooms available for teacher use. Two bathrooms are located in the same building and are rarely used by students. Four areas are available for evening class meetings. One area is small, one is very large, one class will meet in the living room of the teacher building, and one class will meet in the dining hall.

The Howard Outdoor School site is about 29 miles from the MESD office. It takes approximately 35 - 40 minutes to reach the Howard site from the MESD office, and is the second farthest Outdoor School site to most schools in the MESD service area. The closest community is Sandy, Oregon.

The Howard site is located above the Bull Run Watershed, west of Mount Hood. The dining hall is centrally located. The cabin areas are about 5 minutes walking distance from the dining hall.

The core of the site is moderately flat. Unpaved logging roads access most field study areas.

There are 15 cabins (7 boys and 8 girls) in 3 areas available for student use. Bathrooms and showers are in the cabin areas. No cabins are currently wheelchair accessible.

There are up to 14 spaces in 3 areas available for teacher use. Bathrooms are located in nearby buildings and are sometimes shared with students. Four areas are available for evening class meetings. All are near restrooms and are equipped with benches and lap boards.

Established in 1924 as a summer camp, the Namanu Outdoor School site is located 25 miles from the MESD. It takes approximately 45 minutes to reach Namanu from the MESD office. The closest community is the city of Sandy, Oregon. The Namanu site I located along the Sandy River at the confluence of the Bull Run River. The dining hall is centrally located. The site has a variety of terrains and some field study areas are located on steep hillsides. Trails access all field study areas.

There are 12-14 cabins in two distinct cabin areas. Some cabins are equipped with toilets, sinks and showers. Additional bathrooms and showers are located in each cabin area. Cabins are not wheelchair accessible. Many of the buildings were designed by a noted Portland architect in the 1930’s and contain folk art and other beautiful touches.

There are 6 spaces in 3 rooms available for teacher use. Bathrooms and a kitchen are located in the same building and are not shared with students or staff. Four classrooms are available for evening class meetings. All areas have tables and chairs.

The Sandy River Outdoor School site is about 15 miles from the MESD office. It takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the Sandy River site from the MESD office. The closest community is Springdale, with Troutdale a few minutes away.

The Sandy River site is located on the Sandy River, west of Mount Hood. The dining hall is centrally located. The cabin areas are close to the dining hall. Most of the site is flat, and the soil is sandy. Trails and unpaved roads access most field study areas. There are more paved roads and trails between the dining hall, cabin areas, and campfire that make this site the most accessible site for students with wheelchairs or with physical disabilities.

There are 12 cabins (6 boys and 6 girls) available for student use. Bathrooms and showers are in the cabin area. Some cabins are wheelchair accessible.

There are up to 8 spaces in 2 rooms, located in the dining hall, available for teacher use. Bathrooms are located in same building and are not shared with students. Three classrooms and the dining hall are available for evening class meetings. All areas have tables and chairs.
